Explore two attractions that in many ways define Barcelona: the inspirational Church of the Sagrada Familia and the atmospheric Gothic Quarter. Although construction on the church began in 1882, it is still ongoing as it funded solely through donations. Even so, UNESCO declared the church a World Heritage site in part for its extraordinary stained-glass windows, cross-inspired shape and eight distinctive towers of the 18 towers that architect Antoni Gaudí proposed. More Gaudí masterpieces line the elegant boulevard Passeig de Gracia, where you will pause to admire its leafy Placa Catalunya, one of Barcelona’s liveliest squares. You will see a plethora of medieval and Renaissance-style buildings in the Gothic Quarter, including La Seu cathedral. The white geese that you may spot in the cloister are descendants of ones that were brought there more than five centuries ago. From the summit of Montjuic hill, you will enjoy another, more sweeping view of Barcelona.
