Puffins & Wildlife Cruising

DETAILS

  • 21/4
    hrs Estimate Duration

Cruise through the pristine waters off the Westfjords peninsula to observe the huge numbers of seabirds that flock there during the summer. It won’t take long to reach a prime viewing area as there are massive colonies of seabirds along the coastal cliffs and on nearby islands such as Vigur. Although you will likely spot thousands of arctic terns, eider ducks and black guillemots, Atlantic puffins tend to be the showstoppers as these black-and-white birds sport bright orange beaks and feet that make them exceptionally photogenic. Often called “sea parrots,” puffins spend most of their lives on the water. They are also skilled flyers, reaching speeds up to 55 miles per mile, which is surprising in light of their stout appearance. Be sure to keep an eye out for marine life as well, as these nutrient-rich waters also attract whales such as humpbacks and minkes. Seals can often seen basking on the rocks.
