While browsing the factory space, you can expect to view original art made with wooden wire spools, metal rods, ceramic insulators and most every other industrial scrap imaginable. Sketches and paintings hang most everywhere, rows of old theater seats line the walls and shipping pallets have been re-purposed as sculptural pieces or to simply hold some of the art. Other odds and ends have been recycled into cutting-edge metal and plastic jewelry. The inspiring collection of artwork proves that one person’s trash actually is another’s treasure.

While parts of it date to the 13th century, it is still known as the new castle to distinguish it from the famed Egg Castle, which began as a 1st-century Roman villa. Castle Nuovo’s five towers make it one of Naples’ most recognizable landmarks. You will also see the Egg Castle, which holds a commanding position on the sea.

In time, you will reach Spaccanapoli, a long street whose name means “Naples splitter,” a reference to it seeming to divide the city in two. Here, you will visit the Jesuit church Gesú Nuovo and the Church of Santa Chiara, which was founded in 1310 and features an austere Provencal-Gothic style. Much of Santa Chiara had to be rebuilt after World War II.

For an even more authentic glimpse into daily life, you will walk through the narrow streets of Old Town, which UNESCO has declared a Cultural Heritage site. The Vatican Museum is home to masterpieces spanning the centuries, marvel at the Sistine Chapel, topped by Michelangelo’s magnificent ceiling. Lunch is included.

Cruise across the Venetian Lagoon to Chioggia, a low-key port known as “Little Venice” because of its many canals, bridges and historical architecture. Chioggia has long revolved around fishing and its fish market is still one of the busiest venues. Like Venice, Chioggia has its share of notable churches such as the 14th-century San Martino and the 17th-century Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption. The latter’s highlights include an ornate high altar with scenes of Virgin Mary’s life. Its bell tower stands outside the cathedral near the ancient gate to the city. During the guided walking tour, you can expect to meander along Corso del Popolo, the main street. Be sure to notice the clock in the campanile of the Sant’ Andrea Church. Said to be the world’s oldest clock, its mechanism is housed in a protective glass case. Take the ferry from one gorgeous village to another in Cinque Terre, all of which lies within Cinque Terre National Park, an area that UNESCO has deemed a World Heritage site.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a meandering drive toward Manarola, one of five villages in Cinque Terre, whose name means “five lands.” Upon arriving, you will pause at a terrace that presents a spectacular view of the sea and the village, a tumble of brightly colored houses clinging to a terraced slope. You will then receive a map of Cinque Terre and a complimentary ferry ticket that allows you to cruise from village to village.

Where you go over the next four hours or so will be entirely up to you. The largest and closest of the villages to Manarola is Riomaggiore. It too has been built into a steep rocky hillside, affording magnificent views of the sea. Points of interest include a 13th-century castle and the Oratory of St. Mary Assumption, which holds a 15th-century triptych.

To the north, you will find Vernazza, arguably the most photogenic of the villages. The main square is a great place to start exploring, as the Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia stands here overlooking the natural harbor.

You might also cruise to Monterrosso, the northernmost village. If so, be sure to visit the convent between the old town and new town. Corniglia is the only village that you can’t access, as it doesn’t have ferry service.

Become familiar with the workings of a dairy farm that runs on solar energy and follows practices that reduce stress on the animals. The farm is adjacent to the Sant’Alberto Solar Park, one of the largest photovoltaic plants in Italy, which supplies the renewable energy in a manner that doesn’t disturb the grazing sheep. The name Buon Pastore, which translates to “good shepherd,” is fitting as the dairy is passionate about treating the animals and pastures with great respect. The automatic system that milks the sheep is designed to be as gentle and agreeable as possible. The extracted milk is then made into a variety of cheeses, a process that you will watch through a large glass wall. The farm also keeps bees, which produce the honey for the tasting that follows the tour. You will also be offered Buon Pastore cheeses that have been aged in a stone-lined cave, fresh-baked flatbread, and local wines.
