Enjoy a candid glimpse into the lifestyle and history of Sitka by walking through town with a local. Along the way, the guide will regale you with stories such as how the Russians first gained a foothold in Alaska in 1804 by overpowering the indigenous Tlingits. Sitka remained the capital of Russian America until 1867, when the United States purchased Alaska. You will see where the land was officially transferred to America at Castle Hill. Once known as the “Paris of the Pacific,” Sitka claims to have had the first opera house, performing arts theater and grand piano on North America’s west coast. Sitka’s interest in the arts is still alive, as you will discover in the galleries downtown and in the Sheldon Jackson Museum, where you may watch local artists painting, sculpting and weaving. The museum’s collection also holds historical art, ranging from totem poles to full-size canoes, some of which the native Tlingits and Inupiats created.

Still, few experiences rival exploring the islands in a sea kayak, where the serenity is so overwhelming that you will feel at one with nature. As you paddle around the islands, your guide will point out marine life, such as sea stars, anemones, sea urchins, jelly fish and more. Animals such as sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions and porpoises are frequently spotted as well, some breaching the water’s surface, others sunning on the rocky shores. And be sure to scan the trees for majestic bald eagles. This tour takes place on land and water that is sacred to both the Haida Gwaii and the Tlingit peoples. Look for bears, deer and bald eagles in their natural habitats from an elevated observation area in the remote Spasski River Valley. As you leave Hoonah, Alaska’s largest Tlingit Indigenous settlement, the guide will enlighten you with stories about the Tlingits and their fascinating history. Upon reaching the valley, you will walk along a gravel path and boardwalk to the elevated viewing platform. Be on the lookout for the diverse wildlife that makes its home here, including grizzly bears, which are highly intelligent omnivores that primarily eat vegetation. While this is an excellent area to observe animals, they roam freely, so there are no guarantees that you will see them. The Sitka black-tail deer is another native that may be spotted from the observation area, as well as land otters, mink and marten. And don’t forget to look skyward for bald eagles, a highly efficient bird of prey that frequents the valley.

Unearth Minoan history at Knossos, King Minos' court. Explore Royal Quarters, Throne Room, and more in this legendary archaeological site. more...

Crete’s fertile soil and towering peaks witnessed the development of one of the earliest recorded civilizations on earth, the Minoans. Knossos was the court of the legendary King Minos, whose wife Pasiphae gave birth to the Minotaur, half-bull, half-man. The excavations on the site lasted 35 years. Entering the Great Palace through the West Court, one can easily understand why the legend of the labyrinth grew up here. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to walk around the site. Admire the superb Royal Quarters, the Throne Room with an antechamber and main throne, and the Queen’s Quarters whose wall above the entrance door is decorated with a copy of the famous dolphin frescos. Apart from the Royal Palace there are also other buildings included on the site such as the Small Palace, the House of the High Priest and the Caravanserai.

Watch humpback whales and other marine creatures cavorting in the nutrient-rich waters at Point Adolphus, one of Alaska’s premier observation points. During the cruise, a naturalist will describe the diversity of animals that converge here each summer. They come primarily to feed in the waters that are extraordinarily rich in halibut, salmon and plankton. Point Adolphus is noted for having the highest concentration of humpback whales in the Alaskan panhandle, so be on the lookout for these majestic and intelligent creatures. You can expect them to be breaching the water’s surface, waving their flukes up and down as they dive, and feeding voraciously to fatten up for their winter migration south. You might also observe frolicking Dall’s porpoises, Stellar sea lions, curious harbor seals and Orca whales. You may also see graceful bald eagles swooping down to grab fish in their talons, and perhaps even bears and deer in the surrounding wooded landscape.

    OVERVIEW

Gain an understanding of Roatan’s natural wonders, wildlife and Garifuna culture before relaxing on the beach at a waterfront resort. Few adventures offer such diverse experiences. While cruising through French Harbour, you will learn about the many environment benefits of the mangroves that blanket the shore. Among them is providing shelter for water birds. You may spot species such as pink-breasted roseate terns in the mangroves, but you will enjoy a much closer look at Roatan’s fauna at a nearby animal sanctuary. Capuchin monkeys, tree-dwelling sloths and scarlet macaws are the star attractions as they are wildly entertaining to observe. The traditional dances and songs of the Garifuna people are also captivating as you will discover during a special performance at the Las Palmas resort. A tasting of casabe bread, which the Garifuna make from manioc roots, adds more cultural texture. Afterwards, feel free to relax however you please on the resort’s beach.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Cruise through French Harbour while learning about the mangroves that line the shores.
    • See monkeys, sloths, macaws and various other species up close at an animal sanctuary.
    • Watch a Garifuna folkloric performance and sample casabe bread, a staple of the culture.
    • Relax on the beach at Las Palmas resort and swim in the sea if you wish.

See how orphaned and displaced bears are cared for in a rescue center and explore a remote homestead on a deep-water fjord. Enjoy views of Sitka from the roadway during your narrated motorcoach tour to Fortress of the Bear, where you will enjoy up-close views of the brown and black bears in residence. Naturalists will elaborate on why the bears were brought to the sanctuary, their personality traits and how they are ensured a fulfilling life at the rescue center. The stories are inspiring, as many of the bears were once malnourished, injured or orphaned. Living in the remote Alaska wilderness can be challenging for animals and people, as you will discover in more detail at a private homestead on Silver Bay that has been in the McGraw Family for generations. Cruise through Silver Bay aboard your enclosed, heated expedition vessel while taking in the beauty of glacially-carved fjord. Look for jumping salmon as you pass by Medvejie Hatchery and learn of its importance to the local fisheries. Ashore at the head of Silver Bay, gather around a crackling campfire and hear tales of the prospectors that came to the area hoping to strike it rich. Since little precious metal was found in the area, the quick thinking prospectors named the inlet Silver Bay, with hopes of driving speculation in the area in order to sell their claims to unwitting investors in the Eastern United States. Take in the natural beauty of the area from the shoreline as well as from your expedition boat as your expert guides search for Steller sea lions, brown bears, and other species of wildlife common to the area. At Sawmill Cove, board your motorcoach to return to Sitka while your driver guide points out areas of interest such as Sitka National Historical Park and the Alaska Raptor Center.

Enjoy a stunning view of Mount Fuji from a beautiful shrine complex built to honor one of Japan’s feudal lords and savor a seafood lunch at a bustling fresh fish market. Head to the Nihondaira Park Outlook, which offers a glorious view of Suruga Bay and majestic Mount Fuji. Kunozan Toshogu Shrine perches above the outlook, which you will reach via cable car. Dedicated to the feudal lord Tokugawa Ieyasu, who unified Japan in the early 1600s, the shrine is a complex of ornate bright-red buildings constructed in the Shinto style. While browsing, be sure to notice the guardian statue near the Romon Gate and the drum tower. The three main halls within the complex are elaborately decorated, but vary architecturally. The carved ceiling in Honden Hall is particularly interesting. For a bit of entertainment, you might select a random paper fortune from a box and then tie it to a string in hopes that the fortune will come true. This common practice at Japanese shrines is known as omikuji. Stroll through Kashi-no-Ichi, a large fish market on Shimizu’s waterfront. While the signage will be in Japanese, the guide will translate the names of the seafood that you may not recognize. Afterwards, you will enjoy lunch at a restaurant within the market before returning to the pier.

Discover authentic Barcelona in vibrant Corts and affluent Sarria neighborhoods. Experience lively markets, local cafes, and charming streets. more...

Stroll through two lesser-known neighborhoods that will present an authentic look at daily life, as you will experience them as a local. While browsing one of the most vibrant markets in the Corts neighborhood, you can expect to watch a lively interaction between the residents and the vendors, as they socialize and amicably haggle over prices. Later, over coffee at a nearby restaurant, you can discuss the experience with the guide and how it might differ from your upcoming stroll through the Sarria neighborhood, which is more affluent and traditional. While meandering through its pretty streets, you can sense that the neighborhood was once an independent rural village. Largely quiet and residential, Sarria offers a unique perspective of Barcelona life, as well-heeled celebrities, politicians and artists are among its residents. You will have the chance to mingle with the locals at one of the bakeries, in a church and later over tapas at Bar Tomás.

Point Adolphus has the highest concentration of humpback whales in the Alaskan panhandle, so be on the lookout for these majestic and intelligent creatures. They will be breaching the water’s surface, waving their flukes up and down as they dive, and feeding voraciously to fatten up for their winter migration south. You might also observe frolicking Dall’s porpoises, Stellar Sea Lions, curious Harbor Seals and Orca whales, which sometimes feed on infirm or wounded humpbacks. Check out Maui’s massive Haleakala volcano from bottom to top, as you journey from sea level to the summit to view spectacular island scenery and the immense crater of volcanic rock. You can catch a glimpse of Haleakala, Maui’s massive dormant volcano, from almost any point on the island, but you will go all the way to the top on this scenic journey – from sea level to 10,000 feet. At the summit is a vast crater seven and a half miles long by two and a half miles wide, and 3,000 feet deep. It last erupted in 1790 and has slumbered ever since, though that does not mean it won’t one day wake up. The Hawaiians revere it as a sacred site, and tell tales of Pele, Goddess of Fire and Volcanos.

The views from the top are magnificent. If the day is clear, you may even make out two other towering peaks – Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on the Big Island. From the crater’s rim, you'll be able to appreciate first hand the unique beauty of this imposing caldera with its interesting mix of volcanic rock and plant life, some of which, like the silversword plant, is found only in Hawaii's volcanic craters.

Encompassing the best that Bar Harbor has to offer, this tour includes not only the beautiful scenery of Acadia National Park, but you’ll also learn about the fascinating world of the lobster fisherman and journey back in time to experience an example of Bar Harbor’s Golden Age architecture. Your journey along Park Loop Road will take you along the ocean’s edge passing Otter Cliff and Thunder Hole where the ocean swells converge against the granite cliffs to create a thunderous roar. Depending on traffic and weather conditions, a photo stop will also be made at Thunder Hole, Schooner Head or Otter Cliffs. You are brought back in time to the exclusive world of the Gilded Age. Your guide will share tales of a bygone era, when America's wealthiest families made Bar Harbor their summer playground.

Following your tour of the Theater you will then be treated to a fascinating look into Maine’s lobster industry. A licensed Maine Lobsterman will explain the life cycle of the lobster, demonstrate the use of authentic traps and show you how these succulent creatures are caught. At the end of the tour, you are free to explore Bar Harbor’s many shops, boutiques and restaurants or join your guide for a short stroll back to the pier.

Experience a narrated excursion of Halifax, including a drive by historic properties, a restored section of the waterfront, Citadel Hill and the beautiful public gardens before heading out to Peggy’s Cove. On this tour you’ll travel along the scenic coastal highway to the tiny village of Peggy’s Cove, where less than 40 residents live year round. See the brightly colored houses nestled close to the water’s edge in this working rustic fishing village.

As you enter the cove, drive by the monument carved by local artist William deGarthe from a massive slab of granite and a tribute to the people of Peggy’s Cove. Your guide will also tell you about the cove, explain how it got its name, tell you the story of the lighthouse and talk about the lobster fishery, which is the backbone of the local economy. There is also an optional live lobster demonstration by your guide, if you wish. Explore the village on your own and if you choose, there is plenty of time to visit a few of the shops and galleries before you return to your ship.

Gain an understanding of the Big Island’s history through attractions that highlight the life of the early Hawaiians and the influence of Catholic missionaries. Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park will offer a glimpse into the early culture, as it was a place of refuge for those that had violated the sacred laws known as kapu. There, you will see a temple where criminals could be absolved of their transgressions and safely return to society. To complement the experience, you will visit the 19th-century Painted Church. Its interior features frescoes and murals of biblical scenes that a Belgian priest painted to teach the islanders Catholicism. The missionaries were also instrumental in dismantling the harsh kapu laws. You will also learn how coffee was introduced to Hawaii in the 1820s and how it is processed today at the Royal Kona Coffee Center. It is an excellent setting to enjoy a cup of fresh-brewed Kona coffee.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Visit one Hawaii’s most sacred sites, where criminals could find safe refuge.
    • View the biblical murals and frescoes that adorn the Painted Church.
    • Enjoy a cup of Kona coffee and learn about its production at a coffee mill.

Continue through the rugged lava fields of the Reykjanes peninsula towards the Blue Lagoon. Here, you’ll have approximately two hours to indulge in the famous waters of the lagoon. The water of the Lagoon is 98° F warm, mineral-rich and reputed for its healing properties. The blue color of the water, the steam and the 13-foot high lava wall surrounding the Lagoon succeed in creating a unique atmosphere. This natural and very popular health spa is now a major attraction in the region, one of the most visited places on the island. The facilities offer a tax-free shop, café and very good changing-rooms.

Your drive back to Reykjavik takes you over the barren Reykjanes peninsula dominated by old lava-flows.

Newport is as famous for its coastal beauty, as it is for its architectural magnificence. Enjoy both on this tour that combines a spectacular stroll along the Cliff Walk trail with a visit to The Breakers, one of Bellevue Avenue’s most spectacular mansions. Begin with a nature walk along Newport’s famous cliff walk, resplendent with wildflowers, colorful birds, and interesting geology. This 1 1/4 mile stretch takes you on a path that runs between the rocky coastline and the “backyards” of many of Bellevue Avenue’s palatial cottages. As you walk, your guide will share the stories of America's "gilded age" and the cast of characters that made Newport one of the nation's wealthiest summer resorts. The walk will conclude at The Breakers (sometimes due to congestion, the walk will begin after touring the mansion).

From the 1870s to the 1920s, the Vanderbilts were one of America’s most affluent families and commissioned the most prestigious and expensive architectural firms to build a series of homes for them along the East Coast. In Newport, these homes, amusingly called “cottages,” are unparalleled in historic significance and beauty. Built during the period known as the “gilded age,” they’re now National Historic Landmarks. The Breakers is considered the grandest of all of the Newport summer cottages. Designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt for Cornelius Vanderbilt II, this Italian Renaissance palace was completed in 1892 in less than three years at a cost of approximately $11 million, which would be over $200 million today! Originally constructed in France and reassembled here, the Grand Hall boasts 50 foot ceilings and has the largest room of any Newport mansion.
