You can catch a glimpse of Haleakala, Maui’s massive dormant volcano, from almost any point on the island, but you will go all the way to the top on this scenic journey – from sea level to 10,000 feet. At the summit is a vast crater seven and a half miles long by two and a half miles wide, and 3,000 feet deep. You'll marvel at the crater's eerie landscape of cinder cones and ancient lava formations. It last erupted in 1790 and has slumbered ever since, though that does not mean it won’t one day wake up.

There is no better way to discover the highlights of Boka Bay and its natural beauty than by bike. Follow an immensely scenic coastal route with leisurely stops at three beaches, each one presenting a different experience. You will begin a bit north of Puerto Plata at Costambar Beach, a beautiful stretch of sand with the towering slopes of Mount Isabel de Torres as a backdrop. While you may spend the entire time on the beach, as an alternative, you might drop by El Carey, a waterfront restaurant with an outdoor terrace that overlooks the sea. Farther south, you will stop at Cosita Rica Beach. Because of its central location and easy accessibility, it will likely be the most crowded of all the coastal settings. The Maya settled Cozumel about 2,000 years ago and their influence is still celebrated throughout the island. While meandering through a cultural center, you will browse exhibits that depict the ancient Mayan way of life and hear theories as to why their advanced civilization declined. To enhance your understanding of the culture, you will be treated to a traditional Mayan dance performance, participate in Mayan ceremonies and taste a chocolate drink much like the ones the Mayas consumed as far back as 500 BC. An exploration of El Cedral, the site of Cozumel’s oldest Mayan ruins, will provide an even deeper immersion into the Mayan world. Drop by the Sitka Sound Science Center to see a sampling of the marine life that inhabits the surrounding waters and get a literal taste of the sea’s bounty by snacking on locally caught salmon. The center is a great place to learn about the area’s marine creatures as its massive aquarium holds an array of fish and invertebrates. They include Dungeness crabs, wolf eels and sculpins, a bottom-dweller so bizarre-looking that its nickname is the “double ugly.” While browsing the exhibits, you will also learn about Sitka’s thriving commercial fishing industry, see the salmon hatchery – the oldest such facility in Alaska – and drop by the touch tank for a hands-on experience. In time, you will head for the center’s private dining room to sample a piece of succulent salmon grilled to perfection. Later, you will pause for photos of the University of Alaska Southeast, which overlooks Sitka harbor and channel.
