Explore the volcanic, mythic landscape nearby by walking through lava fields and climbing a small mountain before visiting a farmstead that is a leading producer of shark meat. After departing from the pier, you will drive along the incredibly picturesque coast to Berserkjahraun, a lava field with spiked rocks and moss-covered boulders that is thousands of years old. Its name comes from an Icelandic tale in which two Norse warriors known as Berserkers were killed here. The modern phrase “going berserk” refers to the ferocity of the ancient Berserkers, who fought in uncontrollable trance-like states. Then it’s on to Helgafell – ‘the Holy Mountain’, another volcanic landscape steeped in legend. Supposedly, first-timers that climb the holy mountain will be granted three wishes. You will have that chance after a walk to the top, where weather permitting, you will enjoy sweeping views of the countryside. Later, in Stykkisholmur, you will visit its landmark Norwegian house, the oldest two-story residence in Iceland. Constructed in 1832 with wood from Norway, it is now a folk museum that is well worth browsing. A different sort of museum awaits you in Bjarnarhofn, a farmstead surrounded by an ancient lava field. Here, you’ll visit the Shark Museum and meet with the farmer who will acquaint you with shark curing and drying fish. You will also get an unforgettable chance to taste his products but as they are quite ‘aromatic’, it might be a good idea to bring a few mints with you for the way home! After your visit, you’ll head back to the ship, driving through a scenic lava field.
