OVERVIEW

Enjoy tastings of traditional foods in Jeddah’s historic district and sample local life while shopping on your own in an ancient souk. The Old Town of Al Balad exudes history, especially through its colorful Hijazi architecture that combines the coral-stone building traditions of the Red Sea with elements typical of western Saudi Arabia. At three different venues within this wonderfully atmospheric UNESCO World Heritage site, you will taste dishes that best represent Jeddah’s cuisine. The selections vary seasonally but and may include kabsa – the national dish of Saudi Arabia – and perhaps street foods such as balila, a seasoned chickpea concoction. You will also stop for coffee and dates in the hospitable setting of a historical house. During free time, you can browse the seemingly endless shops in one of the quintessential souks in Old Town, where the aromas of freshly ground spices will likely be wafting through the air.

Note: This tour includes extensive walking through Jeddah’s historic Al Balad district on uneven surfaces, cobblestones, and narrow alleyways, with prolonged standing and free exploration. It is not recommended for wheelchair users or guests with walking difficulties, who should carefully evaluate their stamina and mobility. Some shops or tasting venues may be closed or operate limited hours, especially on Fridays, during Ramadan, Eid, or national holidays, and restoration work may be ongoing. Conservative attire and comfortable walking shoes are required. The sequence of stops may vary. Conservative dress is required, with shoulders, knees, and chest covered, particularly at religious or cultural sites out of respect for local customs and cultural norms.
