Ride a ferry across a breathtaking fjord to the historical village of Solvorn, where you will visit a spectacularly preserved stave church built more than 800 years ago.

After departing from the pier, you will drive along the coast of Lusterfjord, an arm of the longer Sognefjord, a sparkling body of water surrounded by steep mountains, blue glaciers and lush valleys. Along the way, you may spot waterfalls tumbling off the cliffs.

Upon reaching the village of Ornes, you will board a ferry for a short cruise across the waterway to Solvorn, another historical village. While pausing for photos, feel free to stroll about, stretching your legs. Solvorn’s landmark Walaker Hotel is the oldest hotel in Norway and amazingly the same family has owned it since 1690.

Driving on, you will soon reach Kaupanger Stave Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built during the 12th and 13th centuries, it is a remarkable example of Scandinavian wooden architecture and contains traces of Celtic art, Viking traditions and Romanesque features. It is the largest stave church in Norway and is supported by more staves or columns than any church of its kind.

Another significant difference between Kaupanger and other stave churches is its noticeable lack of carvings and interior decorations. The reason for this relative starkness is unknown and rather strange because Kaupanger has been a seat of noblemen since the Middle Ages.

After visiting this landmark church and its medieval cemetery, you will return to the pier.
