Fortress Of Louisbourg
hrs Estimate Duration
During your approximate 45 minute drive to the Fortress Louisbourg National Historic Site, you’ll cross over the pretty Mira River which is the longest navigable river in Nova Scotia. The fortress is Canada’s largest historical reconstruction, where you step back in time to the 18th century, when Louisbourg was a thriving seaport – one of the busiest harbors in North America. The site has been meticulously rebuilt to one quarter of the 18th century town, on the foundations of the original by following detailed blueprints from Paris archives.
Your visit to this living museum will begin with the 45-minute Time Travelers Program where costumed actors reenact the lives of individuals that resided here during the pre-siege era. A kitchen servant will talk to you about her life serving the elite and teach you the art of making hot chocolate, the old fashioned French way, which you will get to sample. A Compagnies Franches soldier will tell you about soldier’s life and invite you to a demonstration of a life musket firing.
You are then free to explore this fascinating historic site on your own, taking in the beauty of the exterior architecture of the buildings and visiting some of the exhibit buildings. It offers you the opportunity to imagine life in the toughest of conditions almost 300 years ago.
