OVERVIEW

Discover how the colonial British and Dutch influenced the twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi and watch a traditional performance that showcases the culture of Ghana. Browsing the artwork within the Bisa Aberwa Museum will provide an introductory look at key figures that have shaped African history. You can expect to see enlightening paintings, a bust of political activist Marcus Garvey and a moving sculpture of the late 19th-century Sandema warriors that defeated the slave traders that operated in Ghana. Many of the landmarks that the European colonizers built still stand in the downtown, including the High Court and 17th-century Fort Orange, which now serves as a naval base. The nearby Wesley Methodist Church – one of the oldest churches in Ghana – is another historical icon. Entertainment at the contemporary Raybow International Hotel will add more texture to your understanding of the Ghanian culture and local life through the centuries.
