OVERVIEW

Explore two traditional villages tucked into the mountainous terrain of Mt. Pelion, the home of the centaurs in Greek mythology. You will first visit Portaria, a picturesque village on the mountain’s western slope. As you wander about the cobblestone streets and alleyways, you will come across noble mansions overlooking Volos and the Pagasetic Gulf beyond. The sights around the village are just as magnificent, especially in the leafy main square. A stout plane tree stands in its center and stone fountains provide the soothing sound of gently flowing water. A short drive will bring you to Makrinitsa, another enchanting village of traditional stone houses. The views are so breathtaking that Makrinitsa is known as the Balcony of Pelion. After the guide shows you some of the main attractions, you will be free to explore further. Don’t miss the frescoes in the church of Agios Ioannis.
