Discover the history of the privileged Bar Harbor area by driving through town and around gorgeous Acadia National Park before heading out to sea on a 151-foot schooner.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a scenic and enlightening drive through Bar Harbor. The town became one of New England’s most exclusive destinations at the turn of the 20th century, attracting the likes of the Rockefellers, Carnegies and Vanderbilts, who built opulent summer “cottages” on Frenchman Bay. At Village Green, you will see Bar Harbor’s iconic cast-iron town clock and 19th-century bandstand.

Continuing on into Acadia National Park, you will follow a stretch of the 27-mile road that loops through the spectacularly beautiful park. In time, you will pause for photos at one of the most dramatic overlooks. The exact one will depend on the conditions and time of day.

You might watch the crashing surf spew as high as 40 feet at Thunder Hole, gaze out over gorgeous Sand Beach or stand atop Cadillac Mountain. From this highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard, you will enjoy a bird’s-eye view of Bar Harbor and the Porcupine Islands.

Back in town, you will board the Margaret Todd, a spacious four-masted schooner and head into Frenchman Bay for a closer look at the offshore wonders. As you sail around the immensely scenic island-dotted bay, the you will hear commentary describing the points of interest and wildlife such as porpoises and bald eagles.

Experience one of the most scenic drives on the East Coast of the United States during this memorable visit to Acadia National Park, the second-most visited park in the United States. Boarding your coach at the pier, you will set-off on the drive to Acadia National Park, first passing through the quaint town of Bar Harbor to view some of the charming Victorian mansions built by America's rich and famous at the turn of the 20th century. Upon arrival at Acadia National Park, you will proceed along the 27-mile Park Loop Road taking in spectacular coastal, mountain and forest views.

Next, you will travel along the ocean's edge, passing Sand Beach, Schooner Head Overlook, and the High Seas Estate, a beautiful mansion built by a wealthy gentleman whose wife perished on the Titanic before ever stepping foot in her dream home. Continuing on, you will pass Otter Cliffs and the gulf of Maine with beautiful views of the off shore islands, as well as travel through pine wood forests and past the Jordon Pond House. A beautiful view of the Penobscot Mountains and Bubbles Hill can be seen from this location. The park is home to over 50 species of mammals so keep your eyes peeled for moose, black bear and white tail deer as you make your way around the Park Loop Road. Weather and traffic/crowd conditions permitting, there will be a photo stop from atop the 1,530-foot Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on North America's eastern seaboard. Here, you will have the opportunity to take in spectacular panoramic views and enjoy photo opportunities of Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. This wonderful vantage point allows you to see how glaciers have carved through the granite cliffs to form a breathtaking landscape of lush forest, lakes and valleys. In the event the weather or traffic prevents a stop here, an alternate scenic photo stop will be made in the park at the tour guide's discretion.

Following this last stop, you will re-board your coach and transfer back to the pier.

Hear an insider elaborate on the lobster industry & learn even more at a working lobster pound, where you will enjoy a lobster roll lunch.

After departing from the pier, you walk a few blocks and be brought back in time to the exclusive world of the Gilded Age as your guide shares tales of a bygone era, when America's wealthiest families made Bar Harbor their summer playground.

Besides hearing about the Gilded Age, you will learn about another Bar Harbor staple—the lobster industry. A veteran lobsterman will explain in fascinating detail the lifecycle of lobsters, how the crustaceans are caught, and the steps in their short journey from the bottom of the sea to your dinner plate. Maine provides more than half of America’s lobsters and many of them are harvested off Bar Harbor.

You will next drive to Southwest Harbor, another picturesque town on Mount Desert Island, where you will discover even more about these tasty crustaceans at Beal’s Lobster Pier. This family-owned lobster operation—known as a pound—has been in business since 1932.

While touring the Beal’s facility, you may see the lobsters being unloaded from the boats and delve even deeper into the world of lobstering. Still, there is no better way to understand the appeal than by biting into a freshly made lobster roll, which you will be served for lunch.

Visit three venues in Bar Harbor and sample an inspiring selection of beers, cocktails and Happy Hour snacks made with local ingredients.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a leisurely walk through Bar Harbor, a city with an abundance of bars and breweries that serve imaginative and classic beverages. You will visit three of these establishments to sample their most popular offerings.

Your guide will be local and the proprietors quite willing to share the histories of their businesses. That will make the experience enlightening as well as flavorful.

Bar Harbor has several microbreweries, and you will drop by one of the most emblematic. Brown ales, Irish-style stouts and fruit ales are all brewed here. Maine’s official berry is the wild blueberry, so it’s only natural that it’s used in some of the signature beers.

Blueberries may also be an ingredient in the Happy Hour snacks. Another possibility is a handheld or tasty tidbit made with lobster, as lobstering is a thriving local industry.

If you prefer a sipping on a cocktail to drinking a beer, you will be just as impressed with the local concoctions. For a twist on the traditional Bloody Mary, try a Bar Harbor Clammy Mary. It is chilled with ice cubes made with clam juice.

Depending on which establishment you visit, it may be haunted. Patrons have reportedly spotted the ghost of a 19th-century clipper ship captain in one of the pubs and heard eerie, unexplained sounds in others.

Step back in time to the turn of the century, when Bar Harbor was one of the most exclusive resorts in the world. As painters, poets and authors began to tell their tales of the island’s natural beauty, America’s elite – including the Astors, Fords, Morgans, Rockefellers, Carnegies, and Vanderbilts – transformed the island with elegant estates often referred to as “cottages”. Your tour of Bar Harbor’s bygone days begins with a walk along the beautiful shore path where you’ll enjoy stunning views of Frenchman Bay on one side and elegant, summer cottages on the other.

Passing the Village Green, you’ll see the town clock and the village bandstand where townspeople often gathered on summer evenings to hear the marches of John Philip Sousa and other popular music. As you stroll through the beautiful downtown area you’ll pass a number of Victorian mansions that survived the Great Fire of 1947. Your guide will be happy to share the secrets and tales of this era when fabulously wealthy residents tried to outdo each other with their lavish parties and opulent lifestyles.
