Tips on What to Pack for Your Cruise

Cruise with Norwegian.

Packing for a cruise aboard Norwegian Cruise Line should feel easy because the days ahead will be. Think clothes that don’t rush you, shoes that don’t argue with you, and shorts that work well at noon and at sunset. Out here, it’s less about outfits and more about options.

Things you can move in. Breathe in. Accidentally nap in. So before you overthink it (you know you will), here’s the simple truth: if it lets the day take you where it wants to go, pack it.

If it doesn’t, leave it home (along with your agenda).

Pack a bathing suit. Pack a bathing suit.

Clothing

Essentials first: A light jacket for those unexpected breezes as you stroll down our oceanfront promenade, a swimsuit to pretty much live in while onboard, and a pair of shoes that don’t say “bon voyage” to comfort. Sunglasses, by the way, aren’t optional. Think of them as permission to let your eyes follow the world’s edge even on the sunniest of afternoons.

Dial it up just a notch at night at the main dining room and at some of the specialty and Haven restaurants. Check attire guidelines before you head out to Le Bistro or Cagney’s.

Proper Footwear

You can certainly plan to wear flip-flops your entire vacation. However, some shore excursions have special footwear requirements. For example, you need to wear closed-toe shoes for activities such as zip lining or horseback riding. If you're hiking through forested areas, proper footwear will help you get the most out of the experience. Some cruise ship activities such as the ropes course on Breakaway and Breakaway Plus ships also require closed-toe shoes.

In Europe, you’re bound to stroll down charming, historic streets. Pack shoes that can handle cobblestones, and cocktails.

Weather-Appropriate Gear

Headed to The Caribbean?  It’s unlikely you'll encounter anything other than swimsuit weather. So pack bathing suits, sunscreen, sandals and cover-ups and you’ll be good to go. Still, make sure to check the weather before setting out. If the forecast calls for rain, toss an umbrella in your carry-on for just-in-case.

If your cruise includes ports in Europe or Canada, temperatures often vary from day to night and even from one day to the next, so it's especially important to know what to expect and pack appropriately.

Theme Clothes

Norwegian knows how to throw a party, and many parties come with a theme! From disco dancing to eighties events, avid cruisers love to dress appropriately. Norwegian's Glow Party (known as the hottest party on the high seas, but who’s bragging?) is one of the most anticipated theme events on any sailing. Consider packing an all-white ensemble for dancing the night away.

Enjoy dressing up? Go ahead! Don’t want to? Be our guest! On this vacation, the choice is yours.

Pack for any occasion. Pack for any occasion.

Carry-on Luggage

Make sure to pack all the essentials you might need immediately upon arrival and carry that bag yourself. Your luggage might arrive later and that Mojito by the pool does not want to wait for your bathing suit!

Stateroom Staples

Norwegian's staterooms offer everything you need as you sail from port to port. But you'll want to pack a few extra items to maximize comfort. Don’t forget to bring chargers for all your electronic devices. Also, most staterooms only have one North American outlet and one European outlet, so an outlet adapter will let you make use of both options. Pack a small surge protector to charge multiple items at once!

For more great ways to prepare for your cruise vacation, download the Cruise Norwegian app before leaving home. Use the app to pre-book onboard activities, dining reservations, shore excursions, entertainment and much more.

TIP: The walls on all staterooms are metal. Bring a few metallic hooks to use for hats, lanyards and other small items.
