      There are two main, but opposing, legends as to how Ephesus was founded: The Ionian prince Androclos founded Ephesus based on the prophesies of an oracle, whilst the other legend states Amazon female warriors founded the ancient city and named the site after their queen, Ephesia.

      Ephesus was an important city for the spread of early Christianity. St. Paul and St. John visited the city to convert locals, and Mary, the mother of Jesus, is thought to have spent her last years in Ephesus. You can visit St. John's tomb and the House of Virgin Mary.
