OVERVIEW

Delve into Klaipeda’s intriguing past on enlightening walk through Old Town and by visiting attractions where history comes alive. Much of Klaipeda was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1854 and during World War II as you will discover in the Klaipeda castle museum, which was built in the 13th century when the city was known as Memel. A panoramic drive through downtown will present other attractions such as a sculpture park with more than a hundred works from Lithuanian artists and the neo-gothic post office, whose 48-bell carillon is one of only two still functioning in the country. You will also pass the residence of the Prussian royal family – who fled there during Napoleon’s crushing campaign in 1807 – and a former Soviet military barracks that is now part of Klaipeda University. While exploring the wonderfully atmospheric Old Town, you will pause in Theatre Square and perhaps browse shops selling amber jewelry.

Note: This tour features a combination of guided walking and panoramic driving, including approximately 500 meters of walking on cobblestone streets in Klaipeda’s Old Town and a small number of steps at the museum and other sites. While the castle museum offers ramp access, Old Town areas are not wheelchair accessible; coaches require climbing steps to enter, and collapsible wheelchairs may be stored with assistance from a companion. Guests may remain on the coach at certain stops if preferred, itineraries may vary to manage congestion, and the tour operates in all weather conditions, so appropriate footwear and clothing are advised.
