Oporto Hop-On Hop-Off

  • 4
    hrs Estimate Duration

See Oporto’s highlights at your own pace by riding a double-decker bus around town, hopping on and off whenever you please at the attractions you find most intriguing.

After departing from the pier, you will head into the heart of Oporto, where you will hop on a Blue Line bus or a Red Line bus. They make continuous loops past the city’s must-see attractions. The line you choose depends on what you wish to see.

Either way, simply hop off a bus whenever you want, stay as long as you like at the attraction and then hop on another bus when you are ready. You can also stay on the bus and sightsee, as it will loop back to your starting point every 1½ hours or so.

The Blue Line begins at Clerigos Tower, which was the tallest structure in Portugal when constructed in 1763 as the bell tower of the adjoining Clerigos Church. A bit farther on, you might stop at Carmo Church, half of which was built for Carmelite nuns, the other half for Carmelite monks. For the best view of Oporto’s skyline and the meandering Douro River, hop off the bus at Cais de Gaia.

The Red Line follows a slightly longer route, starting at Ribeira, a district so culturally and architecturally important that UNESCO deemed it a World Heritage site. Among its highlights are a former palace that now houses the stock exchange, the ultra-modern Casa da Musica concert hall and Oporto’s football stadium.
