OVERVIEW

Immerse yourself in Greek history by walking in the footsteps of Hippocrates at the Asklipeion archaeological ruins and exploring Kos' thought-provoking Old Town. You'll visit Asklipeion, abandoned in the 5th century after a devastating earthquake, and view ruins of its temple, baths and sanatorium. You'll learn Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine and author of the Hippocratic Oath, was born here around 460 BC and both studied and worked in Asklipeion in what was possibly the first hospital. You'll hear stories of the doctors, who were priests of Asclepius, the god of medicine, and discover their chosen symbol was the snake, honoring the reptile's capabilities locating therapeutic plants. In Kos' pedestrian-friendly Old Town, view the imposing Castle of the Knights of Saint John, which was faithfully restored following a 15-century earthquake. Take in the shade beneath the massive platanos tree under which Hippocrates taught, according to legend. On your guided walking tour, admire the protective wall, view excavated ruins and stroll expansive Eleftherias Square. You'll appreciate inviting shops and welcoming cafés, framed in cascades of colorful bougainvillea spilling from the rooftops of this picture-perfect city.
