    OVERVIEW

    Participate in your choice of fun activities on Danger Island and learn about the symbolism of the colorful totem poles at a state park in town. After a short cruise to the island, you will feast on a meal inspired by the ones served in logging camps. The surrounding forest provides an ideal setting for you to join in activities such as survival skills training, culinary lessons, competitive games and making s'mores around the campfire. Everything offered is optional, so you can craft whatever island experience suits your mood and abilities. A longer return cruise along the waterfront allows you to look for iconic Alaskan wildlife while the on-board naturalist describes the animals and the local environment. As you wander through Totem Bight State Park, you will discover much about the culture of the indigenous people that hand-carved the totem poles and the symbolism of the figures that adorn the poles.

Drive through the village of Hoonah, the largest Tlingit village in the world, on your way out to the Spasski River Valley. Continue through the Tongass National Forest up one of the old logging roads to the trail head. Once there, you will hike approximately two miles through private Native-owned lands, up an abandoned logging trail, to the secluded locally known viewing area. As you come to the top of the mountain, feel the serenity and see the breathtaking 360 degree views of Chichagof Island and its surrounding waterways and islands with nothing but nature all around you. Your local guide will share knowledge of the flora and fauna that inhabit the area, along with history of the land and its rich diverse culture. The opportunity to see brown bears, Sitka black tailed deer, eagles, and even humpback whales abound. With very little time spent in the forest area, this our provides spectacular views of the area with ample opportunities for photography.

    Ride a state-of-the-art window-walled gondola to the top of Hoonah Mountain and then board an open-air tram for an inspiring ride through an old-growth forest. The views will be spectacular in every direction as you ascend the mountain, which rises more than a quarter mile above the sea. The wheeled tram will offer a closer look at the natural world as it winds through the woods for about six miles. The towering stands of Sitka spruce and western hemlock are a wonder to behold. The significance of the forest becomes even clearer as your guide describes the delicate balance of its biodiversity and fascinating geology. Wildlife is abundant and it's not uncommon to spot Sitka black-tailed deer and bald eagles. You will also enjoy sweeping views of the Port Frederick Inlet, Spasski River Valley, glacially carved reflecting ponds and beautiful bogs known as muskegs.

    Your professional driver/guide will provide you with lively narration and share the unique history of Ketchikan as you drive along the scenic Tongass Narrows en route to Totem Bight State Park, home to one of the world's largest stand of totems. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Tongass National Rainforest under the canopy of majestic hemlock and cedar trees. At the end of the trail you'll be impressed by the large collection of totem poles that your driver/guide will bring to life for you. Through entertaining stories and narrative you'll learn about the culture and lifestyles practiced by the northwest coastal Natives and have a chance to enter into an authentic Native clan house. During your brief stop at the quaint Alaska Totem Trading store, you'll have an opportunity to shop and view beautifully carved totems along with a collection of vintage automobiles. Returning to town, catch a glimpse of Ketchikan's colorful past as you drive past Creek Street, the historic red light district.


    Finally, it's time to enjoy the 'The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show'! Hardy lumberjacks gather in this partially covered and heated outdoor arena, to compete in various logging events for you. Crowd favorites like log rolling, ax-throws and speed-climbing events will bring you out of your seat, as you cheer your lumberjack on. Many world champion athletes, as seen on ESPN and the Travel Channel, spend their summers in Ketchikan and will be performing in this great show.

    Help pedal a unique group bicycle from pub to pub and enjoy entertaining commentary at each venue, culminating with a craft beer tasting. It won't take long to reach Ernie's Old Time Saloon, a landmark that locals have frequented for years. While there, you will learn a bit about the history of Sitka, which was the capital of Russian America until 1867, when the United States purchased Alaska. The second pub will be the Pioneer Bar, a longtime watering hole for fishermen. Between fish stories - which may or may not be true - be sure to check out the photographs of historical fishing boats and shipwrecks that cover most every square inch of wall space. Afterwards, you will pedal off to the Bayview Pub, a local favorite known for its selection of locally brewed craft beers. You will be offered a sampling of some of the most popular ones.

    OVERVIEW

    Fly over the majestic wilds of the Tongass National Forest in a floatplane and land in the waters off Salmon Falls resort, where you will feast on iconic Alaskan dishes. You will fly there in a DeHavilland Beaver aircraft - the workhorse of the Alaskan bush - on a route over America's largest national forest and the crystal-clear waterways that rim Revillagigedo Island. The pilot will describe the natural wonders below, which include sea cliffs, deep fjords and mist-shrouded peaks. You may even spot black bears foraging on berries and humpback whales breaching the water's surface. Shortly after the plane lands in Clover Pass Inlet, you will enjoy an enlightening tour of the fishing resort and then sit down to a classic Alaskan lunch. Come hungry as you can expect to dine on signature dishes that may include Dungeness crab cakes, soy-glazed salmon and baked halibut with garlic lemon butter. Dessert will be just as mouthwatering.

    Experience the beauty that surrounds Juneau with friendly, local guides. On the van ride to the departure point, hear about Juneau's history plus interesting information about the city. You'll be fitted with a disc brake bicycle, helmet, and water bottle and you'll receive a safety briefing. Your first stop is by the Chapel-by-the-Lake, a lovely old log chapel with a spectacular view of Auke Lake and the Mendenhall Glacier in the background. Your ride continues to the west side of the Mendenhall Glacier, with a beach stop for a short break.


    You'll then proceed to the visitor area at the east side of Mendenhall Glacier. This portion of the ride includes a one mile trail ride through the rainforest. At the end of the ride, you'll have a chance to spend time admiring the glacier. The ride covers approximately 8.5 miles on a mostly flat road with some rolling hills. Next travel by van to Merchant's Wharf, an old sea plane hangar in downtown Juneau and a landmark in aviation history for a taste of award winning beers from micro-breweries around Alaska.

    This guided tour of the south end of Sitka is geared for those guests who want to see a part of Sitka that visitors rarely experience, get some exercise and enjoy the beautiful landscape and fresh air that Alaska has to offer. You'll bike along the coastal road with breathtaking ocean vistas and stunning Silver Bay for about two miles. Upon arrival to the trail head, you'll hike in the world's largest temperate rain forest.


    Along the way, guides will share their knowledge of the flora and fauna as well as local history and culture with you. During your hike enjoy waterfalls, streams, and the beauty of the temperate rainforest. The pace of the hike is set by guests and typically one to two miles in length. Guests then return to their cycles for the 2 mile ride back to the bike center, where a shuttle will return them to the pier. All riders are required to wear a provided helmet. We recommend comfortable shoes and clothing.

    Look for wildlife while zipping along the rugged coastline in an open-air, high-speed boat. You will ride in a Rigid Hull Inflatable vessel that is 27 feet long and designed to race through the sea with maximum maneuverability. The exact route will depend on the weather conditions, but you can expect to enjoy close-up views of tidal flats and land animals such as brown bears and Sitka black-tailed deer. The seas here are also teeming with iconic Alaskan animals. You may spot humpback whales breaching the water's surface, pods of orcas, frolicking sea otters and sleek seals. Be sure to look up, as bald eagles and puffins also make their homes in the area. Along the way, the captain will throttle back and elaborate on the importance of the waterways to the native Tlingit, many of whom still follow a traditional lifestyle around Icy Strait Point.
