    OVERVIEW

Enjoy a leisurely walk to a series of waterfalls for a refreshing swim and then experience the local culture by shopping for handicrafts and dining on characteristic Dominican cuisine. The source of the cascades is the Damajagua River, a cool crystal-clear stream that tumbles through the mountains forming waterfalls of varying heights. You will have time to time swim in the placid pools below the cascades and admire the natural setting before continuing on to a typical country market. A sampling of fresh-brewed coffee and a chocolate sweet will serve to whet your appetite for the sumptuous buffet lunch that follows at the nearby hacienda La Huerta. Most of the ingredients for your lunch will have been grown in the gardens that surround this former sugar plantation. To enhance the dining experience, you will be offered a tasting of Brugal Rum, which has been distilled in Puerto Plata since 1888.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Walk through a serene tropical jungle where the only sounds are those of nature.
    • Enjoy a refreshing swim in the pools below the Damajagua waterfalls.
    • Browse the shops in a country market and savor a cup of coffee and local chocolates.
    • Dine on traditional Dominican dishes at a hacienda on what was once a sugar plantation.
    • Sample a selection of rums from a distillery that was founded in 1888.

We depart the quayside and drive north to Bahía de Caráquez, where we board launches that will take us to Isla Corazón (Heart Island). This heart-shaped island (hence its name – “corazón”, meaning heart in Spanish) is located a few kilometers upstream in the Río Chone estuary and is a must-see for birdwatchers. There is an estimated number of 60 bird species on the island including native, migratory and congregational species during different periods of the year. Isla Corazón is part of an eco-tourism project, in which local fishermen have nurtured the mangroves and expanded their habitat on the island. This has been done to prevent further eradication of the mangrove swamps by the industry of shrimp farming. This private initiative, which was started by the local fishermen, is now a protected area by the government, the island can be visited on a guided tour led by the local fishermen. The Frigate bird colony has moved to a smallest islet called "Isla Fragatas" and it is only possible to be seen from the boat.

We return to the mainland to enjoy lunch at local restaurant.

With the pounding waves of the Pacific on one side, and the tranquil Río Chone River with its estuary on two other sides, Bahía has long lured visitors eager to be near the water. In 1998 this changed when the city was devastated by two natural disasters. Landslides caused by the intense El Niño storms of that year damaged -many homes. Shortly thereafter, a major earthquake struck, damaging more of the city's homes and businesses. More than simply rebuild, however, the community decided to reinvent itself, and in 1998 Bahía was proclaimed one of the world's first eco-cities. With a focus on sustainable development and tourism, recycling and reforestation, the city has won plaudits from around the world.

Enjoy a leisurely cruise on the Chavon River as it meanders through the densely forested countryside and explore the replica 16th-century Mediterranean-style village that perches on a hilltop high above the river. After settling in on the covered boat, you will head down the tranquil river, which eventually empties into the Caribbean Sea. The river cuts through a jungle that looks so primeval that it has been used as a location for movies such as “Rambo,” “Apocalypse Now” and “Jurassic Park.” You will also visit Altos de Chavon, the village that overlooks the river. While it will appear to be Old World, the village wasn’t built until the early 1980s. As you walk the cobbled streets, you will pass architectural gems such as a re-created Grecian-style amphitheater and a stone church that contains the ashes of St. Stanislaus.

Our tour today begins with a drive along Manta’s “malecón” or promenade. Our guide enlightens us on the history of this area, which was home to pre-Columbian peoples such as the Valdivia culture, whose fragments of pottery are the oldest found anywhere in South America.

The archaeological site of Cerro Jaboncillo is unique because it allows observation of a distinct and complex society that was established in the area between 900 and 1500 AD. This developed society controlled large areas of Guayas and Manabi provinces in Ecuador. The Cancebí-Manteños acquired highly developed levels in their society practices and with their control of the sea extended their culture to the California Gulf, Mexico, Chile and Peru.

Visiting this place is an experience that mixes culture, tourism and nature. Located on the eastern slope of Cerro Jaboncillo, the area around the archaeological site features a variety of plants and animals that survive in a unique ecosystem that depends on water cycles, especially in the summer fog.

Today you will travel through the lowlands into the highlands of Guatemala to visit the Maya site of Iximche. You will meet your friendly and knowledgeable guide at the pier and board your air-conditioned transportation for the guided 2.5 hour drive through the scenic countryside in Guatemala towards the Maya site of Iximche, a late post-classic archaeological site in the western highlands.

Iximche was the capital of the Kaqchikel Maya from 1470 until 1524 when it was abandoned after the Spanish Conquistadores defeated them. Upon arrival you will tour the site as your guide provides you with relevant information about the structures and the importance of the Mayan Calendar and the so called 2012 "end of the world" phenomenon. You might also be able to witness, from a distance, a real Maya ritual since they are performed regularly on the site and are not part of a tourist attraction. Local Maya Shamans say that Iximche is a site of great universal energy.

After the tour you will continue to a nearby local restaurant for a much-deserved lunch before heading back to the pier. The meal will be served at Hacienda Real Restaurant and the menu consists of grilled chicken breasts, rice, refried beans, local fresh cheese, local dessert, tortillas and coffee or tea.
