Nature Sail & Viking Sushi Adventure

Take a ferry ride into island-dotted Breidafjordur Bay, a prime bird-watching area where you are sure to spot numerous nesting species and enjoy a taste of “Viking sushi.” After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a scenic drive to Stykkisholmur, a quaint coastal town situated on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The surrounding landscape is wonderfully majestic and a sight to behold in every direction. Upon arriving, you will board a ferry and cruise Breidafjordur Bay, which is encircled by mountains that include the Snæfellsjokull glacier. During this archipelago adventure, you’ll sail through whirlpool currents, past numerous islands with strange but beautiful rock formations, and basalt columns. These volcanically formed islands that dot the bay provide ideal sites for nesting seabirds. You can expect to see a variety of species on the jagged island cliffs and flying overhead. Puffins, eider ducks and shags are commonly spotted in the bay, as are kittiwakes. These black-legged gulls are named for their nasal “ki-ti-waak” call notes. Kittiwakes typically nest on narrow cliff ledges and perch facing the wall with their tails sticking out over the edge. You may also catch sight of magnificent white-tailed eagles plucking fish from the sea with their razor-sharp talons. These waters are also teeming with marine life and you might even catch sight of a seal. The abundance of sea life here is further demonstrated when the captain throws a net overboard and hauls in a bounty of seafood. Some of it can be eaten raw as so-called Viking sushi, and you will be offered a sampling that simply couldn’t be fresher. Following your ferry ride, you will enjoy free time in Stykkisholmur before returning to the pier in Grundarfjordur.
