Watch a film about bald eagles on a large high-definition screen, followed by a real-life encounter with raptors and the chance to see Alaska’s most iconic animals in the wild. The film will be shown in the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal on a 5-story high, 180° dome screen for an immersive experience that is as close to reality as possible. After the show, a professional raptor handler will bring in a real bird of prey and talk about its behavior and characteristics. It may be a peregrine falcon, a snowy owl or golden eagle as all reside at the nearby Alaska Raptor Center, which rehabilitates injured birds. You will then head outdoors for a leisurely hike in the Sitka National Historical Park. The trail is lined with colorful totem poles that the indigenous Tlingits carved and painted. Bald eagles are frequently spotted in the forest, preying on salmon in the river that you will cross there.

The vessel is open-air to offer maximum viewing opportunities and has a shallow draft so it can easily navigate waters that other boats can’t reach. There is no better way to observe animals in their natural habitats without disturbing Alaska’s delicate ecosystems. Although the sightings vary from day to day, you can expect to see harbor seals, sea lions and playful sea otters, the smallest of all marine mammals. After a quick shuttle transfer to town, she will guide you through the back alleys and former red-light districts of Skagway. Here, women of the evening brushed shoulders with notorious characters, wide-eyed stampeders, and dangerous odds. Stories of Klondike Kate, Cad Wilson and Diamond Lil depict the adventurous stories of the women who stampeded north. You will pass historic and haunted gold rush buildings as you learn of Skagway’s rich history and the women who helped make it what it is. Your experience culminates with a stop at the world-famous Red Onion Saloon’s restored Brothel Museum. Hop aboard the vintage White Pass & Yukon Route Railway for an immensely picturesque train ride high into the mountains, following a path blasted out of the rocks in 1898, during the height of the Klondike Gold Rush. As soon as the narrow-gauge train begins its ascent, you will understand why the beloved WP&YR is known as “The Scenic Railway of the World.” The train will climb almost 3,000 feet in just 20 miles and present one breathtaking view after another, from thundering Bridal Veil Falls to the rugged peaks at Inspiration Point. You will also pass over the soaring bridge that spans precipitous Dead Horse Gulch, named for pack animals loaded with prospecting gear that fell to the bottom of the gorge. It will be an exhilarating ride on a railway so ingeniously constructed that it is recognized as an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
