OVERVIEW

Delve into Klaipeda’s intriguing past on enlightening walk through Old Town and by visiting attractions where history comes alive. Much of Klaipeda was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1854 and during World War II as you will discover in the Klaipeda castle museum, which was built in the 13th century when the city was known as Memel. A panoramic drive through downtown will present other attractions such as a sculpture park with more than a hundred works from Lithuanian artists and the neo-gothic post office, whose 48-bell carillon is one of only two still functioning in the country. You will also pass the residence of the Prussian royal family – who fled there during Napoleon’s crushing campaign in 1807 – and a former Soviet military barracks that is now part of Klaipeda University. While exploring the wonderfully atmospheric Old Town, you will pause in Theatre Square and perhaps browse shops selling amber jewelry.
