    OVERVIEW

Spend the day at a working ranch that raises horses and fighting bulls in an idyllic country setting where you will enjoy a hearty lunch with wine. While touring the grounds of the Torrestrella ranch, you will learn about the breeding and selection process of the livestock. Visiting the stables, tack room and on-site museum will offer an even deeper look into the world of these extraordinary bulls and horses that will eventually perform in a bullring. Although bullfighting is controversial, its traditions run deep in Spain. That heritage is especially strong at Torrestrella, where three generations of the Domecq family have been involved in rejoneo – the traditional art of bullfighting on horseback. As part of the A Campo Abierto experience, you will watch a performance of equestrian dressage that demonstrates the relationship between these highly trained horses and the bulls. A classic paella lunch follows in the ranch’s garden.

    • Gain an understanding of how the horses are trained and how the bulls are raised.

Admire the naturally beautiful beaches that rim Cadiz as a scenic appetizer of sorts before heading into Old Town for lunch. Many of those beaches have received a Blue Flag designation for being clean and environmentally friendly. Consequently, they are all naturally beautiful as you will discover while pausing at Playa de Caleta. This spectacular stretch of sand in the shadow of San Sebastian Castle is so photogenic that it was chosen as a film location for the James Bond movie “Die Another Day.” The aptly named restaurant El Faro – meaning The Lighthouse – stands nearby in the Old Quarter. Being the oldest continuously occupied city in Western Europe, Cadiz exudes history, especially there. Three generations of the Córdoba family have run El Faro since it opened in 1946, and you can expect an extraordinary dining experience. Seafood dominates the menu and is especially satisfying when prepared in a classic Cadiz style.

    • Pause at Playa de Caleta, a particularly beautiful beach next to San Sebastian Castle.

Seven different species of whales and dolphins live in these waters, including pilot whales, sperm whales and striped dolphins. Chances are, you will see these magnificent creatures breaching the surface as they feed in the nutrient-rich waters. The experience will be unforgettable and well worth discussing over lunch on your own during free time in Tarifa.

Take in the architectural highlights of Palma and visit a pearl factory to watch artisans create lustrous, perfectly formed Majorca pearls using a time-honored technique.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at Bellver Castle, a spectacular Gothic landmark from the 14th century. Its round design is unusual among Spanish castles, and although seemingly impenetrable, the fortress never served a defensive purpose. It was used mainly as a prison. As you ramble about the hilltop castle taking photos, you will appreciate the origin of its name, which means “lovely view” in Catalan.

An introductory driving tour of Palma follows, during which you may spot the lovely Gran Hotel and the historical Theatre Principal, which was inaugurated in 1667 as the House of Comedies. In time, you will reach the village of Montuiri for a pearl factory tour.

Majorca pearls have been manufactured on the island since the 19th century and they are extraordinarily lustrous. The pearls are hand-made using a closely guarded technique developed more than a century ago. The pearls aren’t natural, so they tend to be perfectly uniform, a feature that’s especially noticeable in a long strand of pearls.

You will have time to shop for pearl jewelry before returning to Palma for more shopping or to explore gems such La Seu, the city’s Gothic cathedral. Its golden sandstone exterior with its flying buttresses is particularly fabulous as it was meant to demonstrate the might of Mallorca’s Christian conquerors, who built the cathedral.

Discover Torre Glòries & Forum Building's design challenges, admire Sagrada Familia, & Barcelona's Cathedral on a captivating architectural tour. more...

    OVERVIEW

Walk through two modernistic buildings with an architectural historian that will describe their design challenges in vivid detail. As futuristic as Torre Glòries tower is, its bullet shape resembles the steeples of Sagrada Familia, architect Antoni Gaudí’s famed but controversial basilica that has been under construction since 1882. Torre Glòries also has had its share of distractors, as the glass-covered, multi-colored building has been criticized for issues ranging from its small windows to awkward donut-shaped floor plan. However, seeing it in person with an informed architect will shed light on the tower’s design and how it was achieved. In the same vein, the quirky triangular Forum Building overcame initial design flaws to become an admired symbol of Barcelona’s urban renewal. The expert guide will point out its bold technologies and use of materials of alternating textures and patterns. Be sure to ask why much of the building is lifted off the ground. As you continue, you'll be led to the magnificent Sagrada Familia, where you'll have some free time to admire and contemplate its intricate façade and the beautiful surroundings. It's a truly remarkable piece of art. Finally, the tour culminates with an exterior visit to Barcelona's Cathedral, a stunning example of Gothic architecture, as you stroll through the historic Gothic Quarter. Embark on an unforgettable journey through Barcelona's treasures.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Follow an architectural historian through two controversial buildings for an insider’s perspective.
    • Gain insight into the cutting-edge technologies used in the bullet-shaped Torre Glòries tower.
    • Learn how the futuristic Forum Building endured a rocky start to become a beloved icon.

Enjoy a panoramic drive of the city while your guide points out the most important monuments and highlights of the city such as the Constitution Monument and the beautiful cathedral.

Enjoy a leisurely, mostly downhill walk from Montjuic hill to historical Plaza España while admiring the lovely views and attractions in between. The lookout atop the hill presents a sweeping panorama of Barcelona all the way to the sea, which will give you an excellent understanding of how the city lays out. As you follow the descending footpath, you will soon pass the ramparts of Montjuic Castle, a 17th-century fortress that played a key role in the War of the Spanish Succession. The guide will elaborate on Barcelona’s history and most intriguing landmarks such as the iconic La Sagrada Familia basilica as you descend to the beautifully terraced Mirador de l’Alcalde lookout and on to the National Palace. The domed Spanish Renaissance-style building was constructed for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition and now houses the National Art Museum of Catalonia. The nearby Plaza España was also built for the exposition. The bullring there is now a shopping center.
