Take in the landmarks of Port Elizabeth from the comfort of your coach, leaving you with a wonderful impression of South Africa’s beloved Friendly City.

At the entrance to the harbor, note the soaring Campanile, which was erected in 1923 and holds a carillon of 23 bells in honor of the area’s first British settlers. Continuing along the scenic shore, you’ll pass the lovely suburb of Summerstrand, drive through the campus of the Nelson Mandela University and perhaps stop at Shark Rock Pier to take in panoramic views of the city.

Pausing for photos whenever possible, see the beautiful Victorian Gothic Main Library, the Feather Market, constructed during the ostrich feather boom, and Dias Cross, a tribute to Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias, who erected a cross nearby after discovering Algoa Bay in 1488. At the Donkin Reserve park, you’ll observe a stone pyramid dedicated to Elizabeth Donkin, after whom the city was named in the 1820s. Admire well-preserved Fort Frederick and two sporting venues, Saint George’s Park Cricket Ground, which is South Africa’s oldest bowling green, and the more modern Nelson Mandela Stadium, all testament to Port Elizabeth’s dynamic role in South Africa’s history.

Stroll through colonial Luderitz and admire the spectacular architecture built during the town’s heyday at the beginning of the 20th century, when diamonds were discovered nearby.

After walking from the pier, you will soon be immersed in the German ambiance of bayside Luderitz. Although Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias landed here in 1488, the area remained unsettled until German tobacco merchant Adolf Luderitz purchased much of the surrounding land nearly 400 years later. The sleepy port soon became an important supply post for Germany’s colonization of southwest Africa, and Luderitz grew accordingly, especially after diamonds were discovered in the nearby Namib Desert.

As you approach Luderitz’s prominent Diamond Hill, you will see Goerke Haus, one of the most extravagant mansions built during the boom at the start of the 20th century. Renovated and full of period furnishings, the estate was built for diamond entrepreneur Hans Goerke in an Art Nouveau style with German and African themes.

Felsenkirche is another outstanding Diamond Hill landmark. The Evangelical Lutheran church was built in 1912 with private donations from German citizens and is renowned for the stained-glass panel above its altar, which Emperor Wilhelm II donated.

Finally, there is Luderitz Museum, where you will learn more about Germany’s colonization efforts, the diamond industry and Namibia’s flora and fauna. Interesting artifacts include whalebones, photos of the indigenous people and colonial mining equipment. After visiting, you may follow the guide back to the pier or return later on your own.

Explore Durban's unique blend of diverse Asian, African and European cultural influences during a tour of this coastal city.

Depart the pier for a scenic drive along the palm tree-lined Victoria Embankment. Pass by highlights such as the Vasco Da Gama Clock, the Dick King Statue, the imposing Durban Club and the Yacht Club, before stopping briefly at Currie Hill for panoramic views and photo opportunities of the city below.

Visit the Durban Botanical Gardens. Upon arrival, you will take a leisurely stroll through the lush gardens, which house a wide variety of local flora and are renowned for their orchid house and rare collection of cycads, a plant dating back to prehistoric times.

Your scenic drive also takes you past the Old Market Square, which is reminiscent of the City Hall in Belfast and serves as Durban's municipal offices. Drive by the Juma Mosque, which is reputedly the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, and famous for its massive golden dome and turrets, stopping for pictures at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Pay a visit to the Victoria Street Market, commonly known as the Indian Market. Browse amongst a splendid array of delicately-fashioned ebony and ivory ornaments, herb and spice stalls, and wooden carvings. Bargains are endless, and time permitting, you’ll have a brief time to shop independently.

Drive into the gorgeous countryside and meet the owners of a winery and a restaurateur who will demonstrate how to make traditional products. You will first visit the 12th-century monastery Agios Neophytos and observe the founding monk’s cave that he hand-carved. The interior is covered with extraordinary Byzantine frescoes. This remote area is also ideal for winemaking because the stony, free-draining soil forces the grape roots to grow deep and absorb character from the earth. To further understand the terroir, you will visit the winery Tsangarides in nearby Lemona. After touring the vineyards and observing the production process, you will sample a selection of wines. Continuing on to the village of Kallepia, you will visit Kika’s Garden Homemade Food and Produce. The proprietor Kika will demonstrate how to make a rustic Cyprus bread and traditional marmalades from lemons, oranges and even blueberries. Besides sampling these goodies, you will be served an organic brunch made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

    HIGHLIGHTS:
    • Observe the interior of a cave that a 12th-century monk hand-carved from solid rock
    • Tour a winery to understand the challenges of growing grapes there and to sample wines.
    • Savor an organic lunch before watching how Cyprus bread and marmalades are made.

Discover highlights of beguiling Mossel Bay and explore a museum complex dedicated to the first European to land in South Africa. Enjoy an enlightening drive around Mossel Bay, a beach-blessed city in the shadow of the Outeniqua Mountains that was named by a Dutch explorer in 1601, when he found a huge collection of mussel shells in a nearby cave. As you travel along the town’s charming streets, you’ll learn that South Africa’s first post office was established here centuries ago after sailors began leaving letters in the cleft of a milkwood tree so that other sailors could deliver them on their journeys.

See that revered, 500-year-old tree, now a National Monument, standing near the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex, which is named for a Portuguese navigator who was the first European to set foot in South Africa in his search for a spice route to the Far East. During your time at the complex, perhaps you’ll visit the absorbing Shell Museum or the Maritime Museum, where a replica of Dias’ ship is on exhibit, along with early maps and navigation instruments. Experience the compelling sites and seafaring history of enchanting Mossel Bay on this captivating excursion.

Following a flight from Port Elizabeth, enjoy a beautiful scenic drive from Durban to Thanda Private Game Reserve. The integration of South Africa's best climate and rich bush land has made Thanda Private Game Reserve the top award-winning safari destination in South Africa.

Special Note: Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

Program details and the number of game drives are subject to change depending on flight details:

    DAY 1
Disembark in Port Elizabeth and transfer to the airport to check-in for a flight to Durban.

On arrival at Durban’s King Shaka International Airport, an English-speaking representative will meet and accompany you on the road transfer to Thanda Private Game Reserve (a packed lunch will be provided for the journey). The travel time approximately 4 hours.

Thanda is a spectacular private game reserve set in 14,000 hectares of Big 5 indigenous bush. Thanda Safari Lodge is the reserve’s flagship property. Each of the 9 suites has their own majestic master bedroom, double sided fireplace, large bathroom and indoor and outdoor showers. The common areas include an inviting lounge, an expansive deck overlooking a watering hole, a cigar bar, a wine cellar and the Thanda Safari Spa.

On arrival at the main entrance gate, you will be met by game rangers who will transfer you to your lodge in 4-wheel drive open vehicles.

Enjoy dinner at the lodge and overnight.

    DAY 2
The day begins with an early-morning wakeup call, followed by tea, coffee and biscuits in the lounge. This too is an ideal time for wildlife viewing. As before, you will head into the bush in an open-topped 4x4 vehicle, accompanied by knowledgeable rangers and trackers who are skilled at pointing out the various animals.

Following your game drive, you will return to the lodge for breakfast, followed by leisure time throughout the day to perhaps take a nap, maybe relax on the expansive deck overlooking the watering hole or take part in one of the many optional activities that they offer.

Optional activities may include guided bush walks and cultural excursions to neighboring Zulu villages where you can visit families in their traditional homesteads and perhaps take part in community projects and celebrations. Perhaps spend some time with their specialist rhino monitors and conservation team or exploring beyond the reserve on a guided boat tour to experience hippos and crocodiles in the nearby iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site. (additional expenses may be applicable and space can only be reserved at the lodge).

Lunch and afternoon tea are included before meeting for your evening game drive.

Following the game drive, sundowners and light snacks will be served at a clearing in the bush, where you might see nocturnal wildlife. In time, you will return to the lodge for dinner and to spend the evening.

Your first stop will be the village of Larnaca, where you will stop at the Byzantine church Agios Lazaros and at a bakery for a snack of koupes, a traditional street food stuffed with minced meat and spices. Cyprus is known for its extraordinary honey, which you will hear about from a beekeeper in the rustic village Valva. You will also taste the honey, which may reflect a bouquet of flora such as thyme, eucalyptus and orange blossom. Once you arrive in the village of Choirokotia, artisan Petros Nicolaou will demonstrate the art of basket-weaving, a trade he learned from his grandparents. It takes about three hours to make a single basket from water reeds, and it is a fascinating process. While observing Nicolaou’s artistry, you will sample local delicacies that include halloumi cheese made in a basket.

    HIGHLIGHTS:

    • Sample honey that reflects the flavors of the local flora in another village.

Your final stop will be Knysna which lies on a lagoon, the mouth of which is guarded by two promontories known as the “Knysna Heads”. The origins of the town name are probably from the Hottentot words 'Xthuys Xna', which mean 'place where the wood is'. An entire industry sprang up around the beautiful yellowwood trees in the surrounding Tsitsikamma Forest, until South Africa's national tree became an endangered species.

Arrive at your hotel - Protea Hotel Knysna Quays – and check-in. Located on the banks of the famous Knysna Lagoon and facing the sea through the Knysna Heads, this exciting hotel development is also an integral part of the vibrant Knysna Quays Waterfront. Knysna Quays Waterfront is adjacent to the Knysna Quays Hotel offering endless dining and shopping opportunities.

Spend the afternoon at leisure to enjoy your room or explore your surroundings.

In the evening, gather at the main reception area and embark on a short walk to the Knysna Quays Waterfront where a lovely dinner awaits at the Drydock Restaurant’s al Fresco terrace, situated on the water’s edge.

    DAY 2
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel and proceed with check-out formalities.

Continue to Knysna Featherbed and board a ferry for your trip to the Featherbed Nature Reserve located on the Western Head.

On arrival at the reserve, board a 4x4 vehicle and trailer for a drive up the headland onto the Reserve, stopping at spectacular viewpoints. Your tour includes a specialist guide giving information on history, fauna and flora. There is an optional guided 2.2km walk through coastal forest and fynbos into ancient sea caves. Thereafter enjoy lunch at an outdoor restaurant setting under a canopy of Milkwood trees.

After an exciting visit to the Featherbed Nature Reserve, travel to Oudtshoorn with scenic stops along the way.

Oudtshoorn, is known as the "Feather Capital of the world" because of its large ostrich industry in the area.

This town, with its wide-open spaces and broad streets is the capital of the Klein Karoo. It spreads along both banks of the Grobbelaars River, which is a tributary of the Oliphant's River. Its fertile valleys are encompassed by the Swartberg Mountains to the north; and the Outeniqua Mountains to the south. Warm, dry summers and sunny winter days make it the ideal breeding ground for the most majestic of flightless birds - synonymous with Oudtshoorn - the ostrich.

Continue your journey with a visit to the Cango Caves - the only show cave in Africa. Situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the well-known Swartberg Mountains, you will find the finest dripstone caverns, with their vast halls and towering formations. Here you will embark on a 1-hour standard tour of the Cango Caves.

After your visit at the caves, proceed to the Queens Hotel for check-in. The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure with some time to freshen up prior to dinner. Situated next to the world-famous ostrich museum, the colonial style Queens Hotel is in close proximity to a multitude of restaurants, curio and coffee shops. All rooms are air-conditioned – and the hotel also has a swimming pool, which offers respite from the dry heat of the Little Karoo.

Enjoy a relaxing dinner at the hotel’s restaurant before retiring for the evening.

    NOTE:
The temperature inside the caves is warm and humid, so light clothing and comfortable footwear are recommended.

    DAY 3
After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, proceed with check-out formalities.

After breakfast, check-out and travel to Safari Ostrich Farm and experience a guided tour of the farm, which traces this unique bird's development. The tour starts in the breeding camp, with a nest of ostrich eggs, where the first stage of the ostrich life cycle is explained. Visitors will get the opportunity to test the strength of the eggs by standing on them - a great photo opportunity. During the breeding season visitors get to see ostrich eggs hatching in the incubator rooms.

After your visit at the Ostrich Farm, continue your journey to Cape Town. Travel along the N2 Road and then over the Tradouw Pass to Swellendam where you will enjoy a lovely lunch.

Continue along the N2 Road over the scenic Sir Lowry’s Pass passing through the suburb of Somerset West. Travel to Spier Wine Estate with spectacular views of the winelands.

Spier, near Stellenbosch, is one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms with a recorded history dating back to 1692. Spier wines are among the most awarded in the country. The Spier Hotel features village-style buildings, lush green lawns and spacious rooms situated next to the calming Eerste River. The rooms are clustered around six courtyards, with each courtyard boasting its own swimming pool. The design is reminiscent of the Bo-Kaap or Mediterranean villages where pedestrians have right of way.

After check-in, you will be shown to your rooms with some time at own leisure to explore the wine farm, you can even go for a wine tasting or relax at the hotel’s gardens or pool.

Enjoy a delicious dinner where you will have the opportunity to savor some of South Africa’s finest wines produced in the winelands.

    DAY 4
After breakfast and check out, meet your guide and transfer to the Cape Town International Airport for a flight to Durban.

(additional expenses may be applicable and space can only be reserved at the lodge).

Lunch and afternoon tea are included before meeting for your evening game drive.
