A Journey To The Center Of The Earth

Enjoy an adventurous journey underground by exploring Vatnshellir, an extensive lava cave that a violent volcanic eruption created thousands of years ago. After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a scenic 1 hour drive through the dramatic, volcanically formed landscape that makes up much of western Iceland. This is the area where the adventurers in Jules Verne’s 1864 novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth” found a passage to the center of the earth, and it has been famous ever since. It is in this otherworldly setting that you will find the Vatnshellir lava cave. Scientists believe that Vatnshellir, which is from the Icelandic for “water cave,” was created about 8,000 years ago. After being supplied with a helmet and flashlight, you’ll start your cave adventure. The cave is divided into two main sections. The upper section features unusual lava statues curved on the sides of the lava tube. A long, narrow staircase will then take you deep into the lower section, a soundless chamber with black volcanic walls. Once you are deep within the lower cave, all of the lights will briefly be turned off and you will find yourself in total darkness. Because of the lack of light and noise, your sense of smell should become heightened. As you further explore the lava cave, your guide will enlighten you on the history, geology and folklore associated with it. It’s quite the tale and will leave you with plenty to think about during the return drive to the pier.
