OVERVIEW

Follow a nature trail through Sitka National Historical Park that showcases totem poles just like the ones that were exhibited at the 1904 World’s Fair. Created in 1910 to commemorate the Battle of 1804 between the Tlingits and the Russians, the forested park is Alaska’s oldest and is rich in history. During this self-guided walk, you will learn about the many ecosystems in the surrounding rainforest and the unusual tale of how Alaska’s first governor gathered the original totem poles to promote the state. The indigenous Tlingit people carved and painted the totems, which feature stylized human, animal and supernatural forms that are highly symbolic. Some of the totems honor important people or events, such as the Bicentennial Pole of 1976, which was carved under the direction of the park’s first Native American superintendent. When crossing the bridge over Indian Creek, you will hear about the salmon that spawn there each summer.

Stand up Paddle Boarding or SUP, is a fun sport and very easy to learn. With just a few helpful hints from our staff, you'll be able to paddle Bertram’s Cove offering views of the beaches and glimpses of marine life.

After an orientation drive through Messina, you’ll head towards the slopes of Mt. Etna through the scenic countryside and see the impressive views from the vantage point of Cratere Silvestri. Here, you begin your ascent, first by cable car and continuing in 4x4 vans. With the assistance of Alpine guides, you’ll walk to see the last lava flow. Lunch will be at a local restaurant on the volcano.

OVERVIEW

Enjoy a close-up look at orphaned bears that have been rescued and are being rehabilitated so that they can live long, fulfilling lives. The venue for this immersion into the iconic bears of Alaska is the Fortress of the Bear, a rescue center that opened in 2007. Since that time, the center has cared for dozens of young orphaned bears and relocated them into caring environments. Circumstances prevent the bears from being released back into the wild. You can observe the brown and black bears from just 25 feet away, a rare opportunity that will make the experience all the more meaningful. The naturalists will explain how the bears were rescued, their personality traits and their daily routines, one of the highlights being feeding time. Their seasonal diets include everything from fish and fruit to peanut butter and honey. As you will see, the brown bears are noticeably larger than the black bears.

The Osprey traverse gets its name from the bird of prey that is commonly seen perched on our decks and consist of 3 easy flights. The first flight south is the shortest traverse at 185 feet; it is also the tallest at 120 feet above the ground. We said it was easy, we didn’t say it wouldn’t be scary!

Start the second flight by be stepping off the platform 75-feet above the ground to soar some 850 feet to next landing perched just 75 feet above the ground.

Ascending a series of stairs takes you up to your launching pad for the final 900-foot zip to ground level back to where it all started.

At these heights the air is fresher, the colors are brighter, and the ground has never been so sweet.

The Island Zipline Adventure course is a combination of the Osprey Zipline plus the Seahawk Zip to give you six high-flying zips plus a series of V-net bridges, chimney climbs and cargo nets, designed to challenge but not overwhelm your physical and mental strength. You’ll have an opportunity to talk, touch, play and swim with gentle and exquisite bottlenose dolphins. Your swim experience begins with a brief presentation on dolphin characteristics, how to use hand signals and positive reinforcement to communicate with your dolphin and various safety guidelines.

Next, your group of no more than eight participants will head to the Dolphin Lagoon where you’ll wade into the shallow, clear waters to begin your exclusive dolphin experience. You'll meet and play with a dolphin for 30 minutes, getting to know each other through hugs, kisses, rubdowns and ultimately, an exciting belly ride. The duration of the program is approximately 60 minutes, including orientation. After your dolphin swim, enjoy complimentary lunch at the dolphin marina and some free time to purchase memories of your experience with the dolphins.

Maximize your time in Bermuda on this great combination tour! First, enjoy sightseeing the rural west end of the island during your short shuttle ride to Somerset Island. Here you'll be provided a Trek Mountain Bike and equipped with a durable bike helmet. Continue through the Tongass National Forest up one of the old logging roads to the trail head. Once there, you will hike approximately two miles through private Native-owned lands, up an abandoned logging trail, to the secluded locally known viewing area. As you come to the top of the mountain, feel the serenity and see the breathtaking 360 degree views of Chichagof Island and its surrounding waterways and islands with nothing but nature all around you. Your local guide will share knowledge of the flora and fauna that inhabit the area, along with history of the land and its rich diverse culture. The opportunity to see brown bears, Sitka black tailed deer, eagles, and even humpback whales abound. With very little time spent in the forest area, this our provides spectacular views of the area with ample opportunities for photography.

Browse the fields and orchards of O.K. Farms and enjoy a sampling of its produce before heading deeper into the tropical environs to view two breathtaking waterfalls. Although remarkably close to Hilo, the family-owned farm feels as if it’s light-years away. Fruit and nut trees flourish, coffee plants blanket the hills and the aroma of spices wafts through the air. As you will discover, sweet lychees and longans are by far the most prevalent fruits grown there. You will likely sample them along with rambutans and hearts of palm. You will also learn a trick for cracking the rock-hard shells of macadamia nuts without damaging the meat inside. The Wailuku River winds through the 1,000-acre farm, creating Kaimukanaka Falls, which will be quite the sight to behold. You will view equally magnificent Rainbow Falls from a private vantage point that highlights the iridescent rainbows that typically form in the mist.

Before reaching Mt. Etna, you’ll enjoy a panoramic drive through Messina. Take in the scenery of the slopes of this magnificent mountain before arriving at Cratere Silvestri. From this vantage point, you’ll be able to gaze out across the Catania Gulf. You’ll have some free time to enjoy the major attraction - the crater and the remnants of the awe-inspiring streams of lava.

Zip through the sheltered waters of Sitka Sound on a wave runner and pause along the way to hear enlightening commentary about the points of interest. You can either take the helm of the two-person wave runner or ride along as the passenger. Either way, it will be an exhilarating and extraordinarily scenic adventure. After a briefing and a practice run to ensure that you maximize the experience, you will race off caravan-style, following the guide, who is a U.S. Coast Guard captain. Sitka is dotted with islands and the forested mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop. Some of the ride will be through Silver Bay, a slender fjord surrounded by some of the most dramatic scenery on the outskirts of Sitka. The land there hasn’t changed much since the indigenous Tlingit people for time immemorial. During stops along the way, the guide will describe Sitka’s fascinating history.
