OVERVIEW

Gain a deeper understanding of Balinese traditions and Hinduism through experiences that present their most enlightening aspects. A panoramic drive into the island’s verdant interior will bring you to a family-owned plantation that cultivates coffee in its rich volcanic soil. The plantation’s higher elevation features a terroir that tends to produce coffee with a sweet, citrus-forward profile and distinct earthy undertones. You will see for yourself by tasting different blends of coffee, which are also available in the gift shop. Browsing the architecturally stunning Batuan Temple will offer insight into other facets of local life, especially Balinese Hinduism, which the vast majority of the country practices. The temple is revered for its intricate stone carvings. At a nearby house compound, you will discover how the Balinese consider their residences to be living organisms and according organize and divide the multiple rooms with a figurative head, arms and legs.

Note: This tour requires approximately 1 mile of walking over uneven ground, cobblestones, dirt, grass, paved surfaces, tile, and some steps, and is not recommended for wheelchair users or guests with limited mobility. Restroom facilities throughout the tour—at the coffee plantation, temple, and house compound—are basic and reflect local standards. Temple entry requires modest attire with covered knees, no mini-skirts, short shorts, singlets, or bare-back tops, and hats must be removed; shoes may need to be taken off inside sacred spaces. Bali’s hot, humid, and variable weather may affect footing, especially on wet surfaces. Travel times and routing may change due to local conditions, and active participation is required. Guests who miss the return transportation must independently arrange their return to the ship.
