Discover the sights of Naha, modern and traditional; and Ryuku Folk Village, for some insight into life in times past.
Visit Shuri Castle, the Symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The brilliant red-walled castle was headquarters of the Sho dynasty for 450 years. Strolling through the beautifully landscaped grounds, you’ll see the lavishly decorated Seiden (Main Hall) and elaborate Shurei Gate, the symbol of modern day Okinawa.
Head to the Ryuku Folk Village, where several old homes gathered from around the Ryukyu Islands help preserve the ancient Okinawan culture. At the village, see artifacts and displays that detail the customs and lifestyle of traditional Okinawa. Observe demonstrations of pottery making, weaving and bingata, the time-honored Okinawan style of fabric dyeing (demonstrations dependent upon activity schedule at Ryukyu Folk Village).
Need to Know:
Note: Shoes must be removed during the visit to the south hall (Nanden) and the main hall of Shurijo Castle. Photography is not permitted inside Shurijo Castle.
