See the architectural highlights in sprawling San Jose and explore a rural village known for its artistry. After an immensely scenic drive through lush inland valleys, you will reach San Jose, the country’s capital and cultural hub. Its attractions include verdant La Sabana Park and the glorious Metropolitan Cathedral, both of which you will pass before stopping at the ornate 19th-century National Theater. As you tour the interior, you can’t help but notice the lavish furnishings and beautiful murals. The massive mural on the main ceiling, entitled “Allegory of Coffee and Bananas,” is the most famous and was once depicted on Costa Rica’s five colón currency.
