Visit several of Old Town’s most iconic sites, which gained even greater fame after serving as locations for the fictional capital King’s Landing in “Game of Thrones.”
After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive in the oldest section of Dubrovnik, a revered UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fans of the TV series “Game of Thrones,” which is based on George R. R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels, will recognize this part of Dubrovnik as King’s Landing, the fictional capital of the Seven Kingdoms.
Your first stop will be imposing Lovrijenac Fortress, located just outside the medieval walls that encircle Old Town. Known as Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar, the 11th-century fortress perches atop a craggy rock overlooking the sea, which represented Blackwater Bay in the books.
Continuing on, you will enter Old Town and make your way to the defensive walls to the south. After climbing the steps, you will walk along the stone battlements, which afford extraordinary views of the sea and the inner city. These walls appeared in numerous scenes in “Game of Thrones”; they were particularly prominent in the Battle of Blackwater Bay.
Later, you will enjoy free time within Old Town, where you may explore other sites that you may recognize from the series. For instance, the Jesuit Staircase was where Cersei Lannister began her Walk of Shame in Season Five, and many of the show’s market scenes were filmed along St. Dominic Street. Following free time, you will return to the pier.

OVERVIEW
Behold the natural beauty of the Neretva River Delta while cruising through its canals and estuaries in a traditional wooden boat known as a lađa. The valley is so fertile that it is often called Croatia’s California, a reference to the many surrounding farms and orchards. Because the wetlands are considered internationally important, much of the them fall under the protection of the Ramsar Convention and must be conserved for perpetuity. As a result, wildlife thrives, especially birds. You may spot white pelicans, spoonbills, pied avocets and oystercatchers among the many water birds. Each year, ornithologists record species new to the river delta, a confirmation that the Ramsar protection has been a success. Before emptying into the Adriatic Sea, the Neretva River feeds Lake Kuti. After a welcome drink at a riverside tavern, you will dine there, most likely on peka, a traditional dish slowly cooked under a dome-shaped lid.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Cruise through the Neretva River Delta wetlands, an environmentally protected area.
• Observe the water birds that flock to the wetlands in great numbers.
• Dine at a lakeside tavern on the traditional Croatian dish peka.

• Dress in weather-appropriate clothing.

See the historical side of Dubrovnik while riding in a vintage automobile to Old Town, where you will indulge in tastings that reflect the local Dalmatian cuisine and wines. Although you will see several landmarks on the drive to the fortified Old Town, once you walk through the 16th-century Pile Gate, the ambiance will become decidedly medieval. After an introductory tasting of two wines at a classic wine shop, you will stroll over to Mama’s Pot Tavern to sample wines that pair with dishes such as black risotto, bruschetta with octopus and tagliatelle with seafood. Other distinctive wines will be served at Škar Winery, especially ones that complement Dalmatian prosciutto, a cured ham whose only additive is sea salt. One last drink – a delightful glass of prosecco – and a slice of fresh-baked cake awaits at Port 22, an atmospheric bistro that overlooks the old port. The island just offshore is Lokrum.

Hike a zigzagging trail up Srdj Hill and browse the fascinating war museum at the summit, which rises 1350 feet above Dubrovnik. Although the 1.5-mile trail is considered moderately challenging, there are plenty of switchbacks that make the slope easier to walk. The rewards will be well worth the effort, as the higher you climb the more spectacular the views of Old Town and the distant Dinaric Alps. Along the way, the guide will describe the local flora and fauna and the important role that Srdj Hill played in the Croatian War of Independence in the early 1990s. Some of the most fierce fighting took place on Srdj Hill as you will discover while perusing the exhibits in the Homeland War Museum. It is housed in Fort Imperial, which Napoleon’s occupying troops built atop the hill in 1812. The collection includes weapons, photographs and videos that detail the war and how it was finally resolved.

OVERVIEW
Wish you were here in medieval Dubrovnik, when stone walls, gates and watchtowers guarded every entrance to the city. Stepping through the 16th-century Pile Gate, once protected by a drawbridge that was raised at night, you begin to feel how each century left its mark on Old Town’s architecture. As you walk down the main street, known as the Stradun, you will pass some of the earliest buildings in Old Town, many of which were reconstructed following a catastrophic earthquake in 1667. Although the exterior of the Rector’s Palace has remained the same since the 15th century, the building has been used for different purposes, including an armory, a watch house and a prison. The 16th-century Sponza Palace – which survived the earthquake intact – sits on a spot where rainwater was once collected, while the city’s cathedral was heavily damaged in the earthquake and was rebuilt in a baroque style. With every stop, it feels as if you’re standing between eras, seeing how Dubrovnik kept rebuilding itself—true time travel for the soul.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Step into the Dubrovnik you wish you could have seen, entering the Old Town through the Pile Gate and tracing centuries of change inside the walls.
• Walk the Stradun and see buildings from the 14th to 17th centuries, each one a glimpse into that time period.
• Gain insight into how the earthquake of 1667 instigated the rebuilding of Old Town.
• Spend free time exploring the historical area around the 16th-century Sponza Palace.
HELPFUL HINTS
• Dress in weather-appropriate clothing.
• Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.
