Famous For

Vik (formally known as Vik i Sogn) is home to Hopperstad Stave Church, built in 1130. This preserved, medieval wooden structure is one of the most iconic churches in Norway. The idyllic town is adjacent to the Vikafjellet mountain plateau and located on the southern side of Sognefjord, Norway’s deepest and longest fjord.

Vik is the primary producer of Gamalost (translation: “old cheese”), which is made using traditional Viking methods. The delicacy is served in thin slices, often paired with a sweet jam to balance its strong flavor. The cheese has a reputation for boosting male virility and has been nicknamed "Viking Viagra".
