A Walk through Gouda - A Cheese Town
hrs Estimate Duration
Gouda is a picture-postcard version of a little Dutch village. Picturesque canals, medieval buildings, a maze of narrow alleys and windmills all add to the enchanting ambiance. Upon arriving, you’ll travel down Gouda’s narrow cobbled streets and stop for an exterior visit of St. John’s Church, dedicated to John the Baptist, Gouda’s patron saint. Rebuilt in the 16th century after a disastrous fire, the church is famous for its hauntingly beautiful stained glass windows.
Continuing on, you’ll follow your guide on a walking tour of the town center. See the Gothic Town Hall in the spacious Market town square, a lovely reminder of Gouda’s prominence as the center of trade during the Middle Ages.
Visit De Waag, a historic building in which Gouda cheeses used to be weighed. Nowadays it is a cheese and artisanal crafts museum, where you can find out all about the history of the place and the products that used to be weighed and traded here. Afterwards, you’re off for some free time to further explore on your own or shop before it’s time to rejoin your coach and travel back to the ship.
