Drive through downtown Napier, observing the marquee attractions of New Zealand's Art Deco City, followed by a stop at the National Aquarium.

Enjoy the sights of Napier, one of the most attractive cities in New Zealand. After the devastating earthquake and fire of 1931, Napier was completely rebuilt in the then-modern style of Art Deco. As a happy result, Napier boasts the world's largest concentration of Art Deco buildings, many of which you'll pass.

Pass beautiful Sunken Gardens Park, and other places of interest along Marine Parade, the coastal highway. This picturesque road follows the gentle curve of the beach-blessed bay, where surfers and boaters often gather just offshore.

After an hour or so of touring Napier from the comfort of your coach, you'll stop at the National Aquarium, an attraction exhibiting every imaginable species of marine life, including odd creatures that local fishermen have donated. There are displays of giant squid, living coral reefs, and tanks filled with seahorses, eels and fish indigenous to New Zealand.

The National Aquarium even houses a variety of land animals, including kiwis and lizards such as the world's oldest tuatara hatched in captivity. Enjoy approximately 1 ½ hours to explore the aquarium at your leisure.

See the highlights of downtown Napier aboard the Hawkes Bay Express, a delightful and truly unique sightseeing train that travels through the streets instead of on traditional rails.

Hop aboard the Hawkes Bay Express right at the pier and begin your journey through Napier, one of the most attractive cities in New Zealand. Your modern road train is styled like an old-fashioned steam train and inside you'll find a romantic, old-time atmosphere. Sit back and relax in the wide, comfortable seats and watch vibrant Napier come alive through the train's large windows.

After the devastating earthquake and fire of 1931, Napier was completely rebuilt in the then-modern style of Art Deco. As a happy result, Napier boasts the world's largest concentration of Art Deco buildings, the majority of which have been restored to their original glory. Riding through the streets, you'll pass many of Napier's most iconic buildings, decorated with relief stucco ornaments in geometric patterns, sleek shapes and even Maori symbols. Of the 164 buildings constructed in Napier in the Art Deco style, 140 of them remain and they are truly inspiring.

The Hawkes Bay Express also visits Napier's beautiful Bluff Hill, where the early settlers lived, and the old port village of Ahuriri.

Travel to the port where Napier was known to have begun, historic Ahuriri. In 1931, the towns of Hastings and Napier were severely rocked by an earthquake; it was this same earthquake that led to a unique rebuilding at the same time the Art Deco concept was flourishing in the U.S. and Europe. As a result, Napier is endowed with a splendid heritage of Art Deco buildings.

Stop for photos at the National Tobacco Company Building, and from there it's on to Marewa, Napier's Art Deco suburb where you'll have an opportunity to view many of the unique private homes and gardens that comprise this charming neighborhood. Travel back along Marine Parade with its stately Norfolk Pine trees to the Art Deco Shop. Following an informative 20-minute film presentation, your local guide will lead you on a leisurely half-mile stroll through Napier's Art Deco Quarter where you’ll see up close its eclectic mix of 1920s and 1930s buildings in the Spanish Mission, Stripped Classical and, above all, Art Deco styles. Interior visits to the old AMP Building and the ASB Bank are also included in this guided walk.

Board a 20-seat, safari vehicle, sit back and enjoy a scenic drive along the coast as you make your way to Te Awanga and Cape Kidnappers Station. Arriving at Cape Kidnappers Station, a privately-owned country farm, you’ll be driven over the rich farmland to within a few feet of the gannet sanctuary at Cape Kidnappers. As you cross river beds, broad rolling pastures, steep gullies and breathtaking inclines your guide will provide commentary about the area and life on this 4,500-acre farm.

Cape Kidnappers itself is a dramatic peninsula at the southern end of Hawke's Bay and is the largest and most accessible mainland nesting place of gannets in the world. This is an excellent opportunity to view the gannets in their natural habitat. Enjoy a spectacular view of the rugged coastline from Hawke's Bay all the way north to Mahia Peninsula, from the brink of a cliff that rises 328 feet above the beach. For your enjoyment, afternoon tea will be served.

You'll once more cross the countryside as you retrace your path back to Napier. Approaching the city, your route will take you along the Marine Parade, seeing the stately Norfolk Pines and traveling past such sites as the bronze statue of Pania of the Reef, the Tom Parker Fountain, Floral Clock, Soundshell and Marineland.
