Get a glimpse of what Dutch life was like back in the 1700’s and enjoy a narrated tour of picturesque Amsterdam. Travel from Rotterdam to the village of Zaandam where your guide will lead you through the recreated town of Zaanse Schans. Carefully designed to replicate the Zaan community of around 1700, this “open air” museum is a popular attraction. As you stroll through the cobbled streets watching craftsmen practicing the trades of yesterday, you’ll get a glimpse of what Dutch life was once like. During free time, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the Dutch art of clog-making at a wooden shoe factory and visit a cheese farm that demonstrates the art of making cheese. You’ll have a chance to buy some local products or a special souvenir as a memento of your visit.

In Amsterdam, embark on a narrated tour of this city of towers and spires. You'll drive past the landmark Dam Square and the Baroque Royal Palace, and make your way to the New Church, a 15th-century, late-Gothic cathedral built on an artificial island. Today, the church is the site of royal coronations and the Central Railway Station, a bustling building with imposing twin towers. Also on your itinerary is Mint Tower - the tower received its name when the national mint was transferred here during the French occupation. You'll also witness the floating flower market and the graceful Weeper's Tower, the site where wives came to say goodbye to their husbands as they embarked on long voyages. A bronze plaque commemorates the English navigator, Henry Hudson, who sailed from here in 1609. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant in Amsterdam.

This non-guided tour is the perfect option for independent-minded travelers who relish the freedom of exploring at their own pace and with their own agenda.

You’ll depart Rotterdam by coach with your escort, traveling through the Dutch countryside for about 90 minutes to reach a designated drop-off location near the center of Amsterdam. Then you’ll have about 4-1/2 hours to do, see and savor whatever captures your imagination here.

While this is a self-directed day, your escort will be available for about an hour to answer questions, equip you with an Amsterdam map, and help you get your bearings. They will also confirm the time and place to rendezvous later for the return journey. If on your to-do list, the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum are usually open from 10am to 5pm daily; you may also want to consider a cruise along the city’s famous canals. Remember that any meals and entrance fees during your visit are your responsibility.

At the appointed time and location, you’ll re-join your coach for the transfer back to Rotterdam. Plan this step wisely: those who run late for pickup must make their own way back to the ship, at their own expense.

A short drive takes you to The Hague, passing lowland countryside dotted with farms, canals, flower fields and windmills, the perfect symbol of Holland's past. See the city highlights as you drive by the Houses of Parliament and the Peace Palace, often called the seat of international law as it houses the International Court of Justice, the principal judicial body of the United Nations.

Although windmills are vanishing from the Dutch landscape, Kinderdijk boasts the largest collection of windmills in the Netherlands with 19, many in working order. You’ll drive through Rotterdam's industrial outskirts to nearby Kinderdijk. En route, you'll travel through Dutch Polderland, low-lying land laced with canals and farms fields. Stop at the Kinderdijk Theatre, located in the Wisboom Pump house. On four surrounding screens, public figures explain the story of Kinderdijk.

You'll walk over uneven ground to explore the windmills, and then take a tour of the interior of a working mill. The Museum-windmill exhibits life and work on the windmills in the last century. The windmills will operate with ample wind, and visitors can watch and experience the works of the windmill. Raging sails pass, a scoop-wheel turns and water is pumped up. The miller on the scene provides explanation. You'll have some free time to walk around the windmills and take some pictures.

Drive to Delfshaven, a borough of Rotterdam on the right bank of river Nieuwe Maas. Delfshaven has officially only been part of Rotterdam for a little over100 years, yet it was from here that the "Pilgrim Fathers" set out on their epic journey to America in 1620. It's also the birthplace of Erasmus. You'll make a photo stop and take a brief stroll before your return drive back to the pier.

Get to know Rotterdam, a city that offers creative and modern architectural sights, including the Weena building, a brilliant white office/apartment block located in the business sector, Café Rotterdam, Schouwburgplein and Kop van Zuid. You'll witness Coolsingel, the main street of the central area of Rotterdam on the right bank of the Maas. At the near end of this wide street stands the Town Hall, built between 1914 and 1920 in Dutch Renaissance style. View the 607-foot tall Euromast tower. The city center also boasts pre-war architecture such as the Van Nelle Factory, one of the most important historic industrial buildings in the Netherlands, and the Huis Sonneveld.

The innovative and adventurous period after the war is expressed in such structures as the Groothandelsgebouw, one of the first major buildings built after the bombing of Rotterdam in the Second World War, the Kunsthal, the Luxor Theater and the Erasmus Bridge, an almost abstract combination of steel and concrete. You’ll stop to view the Cube Houses - a great photo opportunity. Designed by Piet Blom in the '70s, the Cube Houses were intended as a post-Modern village.

You’ll also enjoy a brief walking tour of Delfshaven, a borough of Rotterdam on the right bank of river Nieuwe Maas. Delfshaven has officially only been part of Rotterdam for a little over 100 years, yet it was from here that the "Pilgrim Fathers" set out on their epic journey to America in 1620. Stop at the Veerhaven, for a great view of Hotel New York and your cruise ship.

Take a trip to the city of Gouda, home of the eponymous cheese on this half-day tour.

Boarding your coach, you will first drive through Rotterdam's industrial outskirts and then travel into the picturesque Dutch low country, with its landscape of farms, canals and occasional windmills.

Upon arrival in Gouda, you will leave your coach behind and start you exploration of this historic city that dates from the middle of the 13th century. Your guided walking tour travels down its narrow, cobbled streets and passes the old Town Hall, the cheese market and the Weighing Scales, which feature an exhibit on the history of Gouda cheese.

Your tour also includes a photo stop at St. John's Church, home to a stunning collection of stained glass windows. St. John's Church was completed in 1350 in high-Gothic style and is both the oldest church and the tallest church in The Netherlands. The front façade towers over 400 feet and inside, 64 stained-glass windows dating from the 16th century depict the history and faith of Holland. The windows illustrating The Last Supper and the Relief of Leiden are of particular note.

Next, you'll make your way to the Weigh House (De Goudse Waag) to explore the taste and flavor of four different Gouda cheeses, accompanied by a glass of red wine. A knowledgeable cheese expert will tell you the history of the world famous Gouda cheese and explain how it is made. After the tasting session, you will have approximately forty-five minutes of free time to stroll about town and shop for souvenirs before it's time to walk back to your coach and make the return trip to Rotterdam.
