OVERVIEW

Explore the history and coastline of Hawaiʻi Island’s Kohala region on this full-day journey from Kailua-Kona. The day begins at Honokōhau Harbor, where a walk along the shoreline introduces the area’s historic fishponds, petroglyphs and Hawaiian heritage, with a chance to spot turtles along the way. Travel north along the Kohala Coast to Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site, where a guided visit offers a closer look at one of the island’s most important historic places. Continue into North Kohala for a photo stop at the King Kamehameha Statue in Kapaʻau, a landmark tied to the legacy of Kamehameha the Great. Next, settle into the small town of Hawi, where your deli-style boxed lunch is complemented by time for coffee and browsing the local shops. Wind your way south along the Kohala Coast to Kīholo Bay, where the lava coastline meets clear blue water, and enjoy a beach walk or an optional swim, conditions permitting. Return to the Kailua-Kona Pier by mid-afternoon with a well-rounded look at the island’s culture, communities and coastline.

• Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, plus swimwear if you plan to swim at Kīholo Bay
• Wear flat, comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes; flip-flops are not recommended.

Note: This tour involves moderate walking on paved sidewalks, uneven lava rock and sand, including steeper paved walks and steps at Puʻukoholā Heiau; guests should assess their physical capabilities, and the tour is not recommended for those with significant mobility concerns. It is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Guests board and exit the Sprinter or Transit van several times; there is no onboard restroom, though facilities are available at select stops. Swimming at Kīholo Bay is optional, depends on ocean and weather conditions, and requires comfort in open water. Respectful behavior is appreciated at the culturally significant Puʻukoholā Heiau, and flip-flops are not recommended. Stop order may vary with weather, traffic, park regulations or operational needs. Guests are responsible for their belongings and timely return to the vehicle. Participants must be at least 5 years old; a waiver is required.
