OVERVIEW

Delve into the early history of Tallinn as a prelude to the unique artistic experience of creating and painting edible figurines from almond marzipan. It will soon be apparent why UNESCO designated Old Town a World Heritage site. Founded in the 13th century, it exudes history. In the upper town, you will behold the onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, a grand orthodox church built when Estonia was part of tsarist Russia. Medieval architecture is the draw of lower town, whose narrow-cobbled streets lead to one landmark after another, including Town Hall Square. In Maiasmokk, which was founded in 1864 and is Tallinn’s oldest café, you will paint your own marzipan figurine using natural vegetable-based colors under the guidance of our instructor. It is a centuries-old craft that has died out in other parts of Europe but is alive and well in Tallinn. For inspiration, a collection of finished marzipan figures is on display.
