Experience the scenic beauty, diverse terrain and ancient history of Salalah during this orientation tour of the Garden City, and its surrounding areas. On your drive, you’ll notice the contrast between the lush vegetation of Salalah and the surrounding desert landscape. You might see camels roaming along the roadside as you approach the old fishing village of Taqa. You’ll visit an interesting fort and view typical houses belonging to the local fishermen.

Continue to the city ruins of Samhuram, the ancient capital of Arabia's exotic frankincense trade. Excavations at the site have produced evidence of an ancient city with trade links by sea to Far Eastern destinations, and even distant Greece. You’ll stop for photos at the tomb of Prophet Mohammed Bin Ali, who died in 1135 AD. Both the twin-domed structure and tomb are fine examples of medieval architecture.

Enjoy an introductory look at a remarkable variety of attractions east and west of Salalah, including ancient sites, a lively marketplace and one of Oman’s most beautiful beaches.

After departing from the pier, you will begin a leisurely drive through Salalah, once a royal stronghold for the country’s sultans. Built around the ancient port of Samhuran along the frankincense trade route, Salalah has grown to become the second-largest city in Oman.

You will learn more about the region’s history at the Al Balid Archaeological Park. As you walk among the ruins, the importance of Al Balid as an ancient trade hub for medicinal frankincense will become abundantly clear. Then, you will gain a different historical perspective in the sardine fishing village of Taqah. A visit to the ancient hillside castle there reflects a turbulent past.

You’ll next travel to Khor Rori Creek, allegedly the site of the ruined city of Samhuram, the capital of ancient Arabia's exotic frankincense trade. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a glimpse of an even earlier time. Excavations at the site have produced evidence of an ancient city with trade links by sea to Far Eastern destinations and even distant Greece. It is also purported to be the site of the palace of the legendary Queen of Sheba, which is now in ruins and undergoing restoration. Be sure to look for camels drinking at the freshwater stream there.

After a lovely lunch at the beautiful Crowne Plaza Hotel in Salalah, you will have free time for shopping in the Al Husn Souk, a warren of small stalls packed with perfumes, tribal rugs, gold jewelry and the inescapable frankincense.

Finally, before returning to the pier, you will stop at Mughsail Beach to watch the seawater explode geyser-like out of a rocky blowhole. The choppier the sea, the bigger the spectacle!

Explore the diverse beauty and historical sites of Salalah during this tour that visits the Grand Mosque, Al Balid Archaeological Site and Museum and stops at Al Husn Souq. A scenic drive through Salalah and its surrounding areas exposes the contrast between the lush vegetation of the Garden City and the barren, bleak landscape of the desert.

Stop to visit the Grand Mosque. His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said issued instructions for the building, making it the largest mosque. The invested patronage of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, accompanied by his instructions to the team overseeing the project at the Diwan of the Royal Court, has endorsed the spiritual and architectural role of the Grand Mosque in marked tribute to Islamic heritage.

Drive to the Al Balid archaeological site. As you explore the remains of this fortress city, you’ll see the grand mosque, palace, houses and tombs. See the frankincense tree and learn how its precious resin is extracted. You’ll also visit the museum located inside the archaeological site to view ancient paintings and writings from the Dhramut Dynasty, displays of old coins and ornaments of Bedouin tribes.

Your tour concludes with a visit to the Al Husn Souq. The colorful stalls are heaped with mounds of frankincense, myrrh, incense, bottles of fragrant perfume oils, and a variety of goods for sale. Enjoy some free time to browse or practice your bargaining skills.
