TRAVEL PROTECTION FAQs
NorwegianCare is available for new reservations made on or after February 3, 2025 and for existing reservations created prior to February 3, 2025 that have not yet entered the final payment period.
FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
Payment for NorwegianCare must be made by your final payment date. If you are booking a new reservation and are already within the cancellation penalty period, the plan cost is due on the day your reservation is booked.
Trip Cancellation coverage will begin upon receipt of such plan payment and all other coverage is effective upon your departure. Payment of your cruise deposit without the NorwegianCare plan cost will not activate your coverage.
Plan availability is based on residency, which means that guests who are Canadian citizens but live in the US can purchase NorwegianCare. Do you live in Canada? No problem! We have a plan for you, too. Find more information about travel protection when traveling from Canada by clicking here.
CareFree Travel Assistance™ is the plan's 24-hour hotline for help with lost documents, cash transfers, coordination of medical care and transportation, and other travel-related emergencies.
Guests who purchase NorwegianCare or BookSafe may be eligible to receive up to 100% cash-back for qualified reasons if something comes up that causes you to cancel. If it's not a covered reason and your claim is denied, you can get a credit that you can apply toward a new booking. Guests with NorwegianCare or BookSafe Platinum will receive credits valued at 90% of the non-refundable cancellations charges and guests with BookSafe Standard will receive credits valued at 75% of the non-refundable cancellation charges.
If your claim is denied due to a non-covered reason, Norwegian Cruise Line will provide you with a credit for the non-refundable cancellation charges to be used on your next cruise with us. Credits are equal to 90% of the non-refundable cancellation charges for NorwegianCare and BookSafe Platinum or 75% for BookSafe Standard.
Unless you have started a trip, incurred a loss, or filed a claim, you may cancel the plan for a full refund of any premium paid within 10 days of making your plan purchase and/or if your reservation is outside the final payment period. Plan cost refundability rules may vary based on applicable state regulations. Please refer to your plan terms and conditions for details.
If you are able to catch up with the sailing, you can claim for your prepaid, unused arrangements, meals, hotel, and other catch-up expenses, up to $1,000 for guests with NorwegianCare and $500 for guests with BookSafe.
If you are unable to catch up with the sailing, you can claim for 90%*credits for NorwegianCare. Guests who purchased BookSafe Platinum or BookSafe Standard may be eligible to receive 90% or 75% credits, respectively.
*Applies to NorwegianCare Only: If the travel delay is caused by a common carrier, you miss your cruise completely, and your air was booked with Norwegian, you may be eligible to receive a credit worth 100% of the prepaid, unused portion of your trip. If your air was booked independently, you may still be eligible to receive a credit worth 90% of the prepaid, unused portion of your cruise.
If your home is made uninhabitable due to a fire, flood, volcano, earthquake, hurricane, or other natural disaster, the plan provides Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage up to the plan limits, should you need to cancel or interrupt your trip. If “acts of God” such as inclement weather occur and you are delayed in starting your trip, the plan will provide coverage for the prepaid, unused travel arrangements and additional expenses for meals, lodging, and transportation expenses to catch up to your cruise. The maximum benefit limit for guests with NorwegianCare is $1,000 and for guests with BookSafe the limit is $500.
If your air and/or hotel is arranged by Norwegian Cruise Line, it’s covered under NorwegianCare and BookSafe.
If your bags or personal effects are lost, stolen or damaged, or if your checked luggage is delayed by a common carrier for 24 hours or longer, you may be eligible to receive the following Baggage Loss and Baggage Delay benefits:
Baggage Loss
Guests with NorwegianCare or BookSafe Standard, up to $1,500
Guests with BookSafe Platinum, up to $3,000
Bag Delay
Guests with NorwegianCare, up to $500
Guests with BookSafe, up to $750
*Note that benefits provided are less any amount paid or payable from any coverage provided by a common carrier and/or insurance specifically insuring the lost, stolen, or damaged item(s).
If you become sick or are hurt during your trip, you may receive reimbursement for eligible medical expenses incurred. Guests who purchase NorwegianCare or BookSafe Platinum have coverage up to $50,000 and guests with BookSafe have coverage up to $20,000.
Benefits are provided for up to one year from the date of your illness or injury and are secondary to any primary and/or supplemental medical insurance you may have.

Important: This program is effective when the appropriate plan cost has been paid to Norwegian Cruise Line. This plan provides cancellations coverage for your trip and other insurance coverages that apply only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provide you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home, and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.
