Browse an unrivalled collection of traditional folk items in an open-air museum full of centuries-old buildings from different eras. The sights on the way to the Hardanger Folk Museum will be magnificent, as you will pass through fruit orchards and along a finger of a fjord before taking the ferry across the water to the village of Utne. The museum buildings are arranged and furnished as they would have been in the late 19th century. The path between the buildings features stone plaques with carved quotes from Norway’s most beloved poets. The setting is exceptionally atmospheric, making it easy to imagine what life was like back then. The exhibits inside offer a more personal glimpse into traditional life through displays of national costumes, fine hand-embroidered tablecloths and clothing, and a remarkable variety of Hardanger fiddles, including farmer’s fiddles from the 1800s.
